TOPIC: has varnish been banned in New York?

has varnish been banned in New York? 13 years 3 months ago #35015

A poster at the forum at www.thompsondockside.com has been told by the orange big box store that varnish has been banned in New York state. Can this be true?

If yes, why?

I think that they could not tax it,so they banned it....Actually I have not heard that one yet,but would not be surprised at anything that happens these days....

It is getting hard to find real varnish anyplace these days. I looked all over Omaha NE. and was told by most places they dont handle it because very ew people want it anymore. I did find one paint store that did handle it and they wanted a fair amount for a quart. Most people use minwax now. :(

It has to do with Voc's. Just like the old styles of automotive paint. It can't meet new standards set by those who protect us from ourselves.

I got mine through classicboatconnection.com They carry Epifanes and it's great stuff. Not the cheapest but went on great. There's a few places on line that carry varnish, just depends on how much you want to spend.

It is getting harder to find here in Wisconsin also, but I think that it is just because there aren't that many of us looking for it. Most places that I stopped at said they could get it in a day or two but don't keep it in stock. I went into a Sherwin-Williams store and asked the young woman working there if they carried marine spar varnish and she asked if that was a brand name!!
I bought some spar varnish at Ace and it has UV filters and marine use is listed. It went on real nice and laid out real nice. It looks great so far, and only cost about $15.
