Recently we had a great discussion on the use of Rustoleum for fiberglass boat applications. I have used it for years with good results and this was before their NEW line of top side marine paints. Color selection still sucks but I am debating whether or not to try the Top Side Sand Beige on my CC Stingray (deck and seats only..leave white as is)because I think it will be a nice match for the original 58 Johnson(baby Javelin) it has on it.

Lets have a vote. Should I use it or trek across town to pay an outrageous price at Boat US for a Petit or Brightside epoxy?

Here is the color of the Sand Beige: Crap can't get the gif file to load... Have a look here:

www.rustoleum.com/CBGProduct.asp?pid=4

And here is the boat and motor..(have it stripped and holes filed and almost ready to prime)

I use Brightside. You can find it for as low as $28 per quart online. $78 per gallon also. Here is how line turned out. I rolled and tipped it.

Personally, I would consider the Sand Beige for the hull, but I would keep the lid the stock color...

Tim,
My vote is the original color. Just really like that color on a vintage boat.

Yea Dave that is the original gel coat...its all original but certainly not saveable. Way too many cover snaps and other intrusions that needed to be filled.

I too am leaning towards original robins egg or whatever blue that is. I'll probably go that route but it's just a hassle to order and wait online...BUT I might as well do it right if I am going to spend this much time preparing.

I'm torn with the decision....go unique or stay orig. Maybe I'll do a little test patch on the removable back seat/well cover to see what it looks like....only gonna waste $15 in the paint I bought.

Stay tuned and thanks for the votes fellas.

Actually in thinking about it.... though the gel coat is chalky and faded now ....I am thinking that its original might be close to Ron's color(what is it Ron?? Blue Ice? If so details on getting it would be helpful.

I'll take a pic of the dash under the wheel which is true color and post tomorrow.

Thanks,
Tim

petit easypoxy bikini blue and blue ice. bikini blue is the darker of the two. i don't know how well it will hold up below the waterline unless its baked in a car oven.

I like the original look. I was thinking of repainting my boat a different color but then I was thinking of when I was 10 and my grandfather taking us out on the lake and that baby blue and white. I guess it really comes down to what you feel like custom, or original. Either way it would look great and turn some heads

You can take your Rustoleum to an auto paint jobber and get them to add tint to match any color you want. I WAS going to do that on my Seafair hull, but decided to stick with white. I'm using Rustoleum epoxy for my primer, and Rustoleum plyurethane for my paint.

That Sand beige is a very pretty hue. I can't see staying with OEM colors if you'd rather do something different. And that's from a guy with OEM colors on his old boat. I used Brightsides and if I was to do it over, would use Rustoleum. I believe it is much easier to work with. Eventually I hope to have my deck painted professionally a base coat/clear coat to get a lasting, waxable shine. Brightsides from Spring '10 to Spring '11 completely lost its shine, had to re-do it.

Good luck!

paint, Though I have not tryed the rustoleum yet I have used brightside interlux with great sucsess, I painted this 65 g3 8 years ago, been to fla 2 times from centeral IN Beloit WI several times and just 2 road rash scraches. it looks like I spray'd it on but I used a 4" foam roller made for cabnits. 7 cotes on the hull-wet sanding 24 hrs between each and 5 cotes on top. Now it did take about 3 months to realy settle down, it seemed to move-flatten down all that time. I need to re do the top because I used a cheep cover and stored it in my barn and the BAT crap soaked through and left small purple spots, Ive never used soap to clean it or wax, i did not sand the final coat,or buff it .

If you want I can have my B.I.L. tint some good paint up for you.

I can have him scan the color off an original, (close) color sample from the brochure. It wont be exact, but closer than the faded stuff on the boat. You could also rejuvenate a spot on the boat for scanning if you prefer.

He runs an auto body paint department in Buffalo.
