TOPIC: Tools Source and a (hopefully) helpful tip

Tools Source and a (hopefully) helpful tip 13 years 4 months ago #32575

Greetings,

I am posting this rather than in the JEGO forum because it's relevent to any boat motor...

So I've undertaken my own repair and maintenance of twin 35hp '58 Seahorse motors and find that I am in need of a couple of tools.

Does anyone know of a good source for vintage outboard motor tools? Specifically seal and bearing puller/install tools...

Here's the tip for those of you also attempting your own maintenance and repair - Sorry if this is old news to some of you -

So, to replace the shift rod o-ring seal in the lower unit (the one about the size of a cheerio). The tip I got was that it was possible to remove the old one and insert the new one without knocking out the retainer bushing...and it is - I used a couple different dental picks to get the old one out - give the new one a very light coat of oil (just a couple drops) and dull tipped flat head screw drivers to push the new one in.

My addition to the tip - Insert a flat ended rod of a diameter just small enough to fit through the hole on the opposite side. (I taped mine in place so the end of the rod was flush with the bushing). This seems to help quide the o-ring into it's groove and prevents it from pushing out the opposite hole.

The first time I replace this 0-ring I destroyed 2 before the notion struck me to try the rod idea. The second time I replaced the 0-ring, I only had to destroy one before I REMEMBERED the rod idea.

Hope this helps someone some day :)

Cheers,
Rob

Glad that the o-ring replacement worked for you.
I suggested that method on the aomci forum and received nothing but " scorn " from the experts over there.
They all said " it is impossible "

PM Frank Rob on the AOMCI site...he makes many tools that are great

He even has a tool for R&R the shift rod o-ring that is well worth the money...Get the coil ring for sure,,,saves a lot of time

Professor,

You're welcome! Happy to be able to give you credit for the tip. It takes some work but was preferable to trying to knock the bushing out.

Rob

TallTexan,

Thanks for the info. I sent Frank an e-mail a little earlier this AM.

It is just like any other job on these outboards.
Once you see it done or do it yourself you say " why would I pay $80.00 hr for this easy work ".
The next time you need to install a shift o-ring that way it will be easy.
I do have the proper factory tool as well.
Did it the other way " just for fun "
