TOPIC: Engine size??

Engine size?? 13 years 11 months ago #31887

Hello everyone! I'm new to the site and thought you folks could help me.Two weeks ago I purchased a 1963 Glasspar Marathon on a Cox trailer for the paltry sum of $100.00!!The boat is quite solid needing only seats and a Motor. The trailer is also in great shape but needing tires.
My question is what would be the H.P. rating for this boat?I have a shot at a 1963 75 H.P. Evinrude.Do you think this is too much Motor for this boat?I'd really like to use this motor as it is the same year as the boat.
What do you think? Thanks in advance.Charlie.

I believe the Marathon was rated for 80 HP. Most of the family runabouts were rated for 100HP or less by 1963.

The 75HP OMC engine would be fine - just be sure that the engine shaft length matches the needs of the boat transom.

I'm not familiar with Marathon boats. How long is it? What is the transom height? I'm sure you already did this, but, look around the boat and see if you can locate a small placard/decal that lists weight guidlines/engine size. Good Luck.

Those Old OMC V4s Can use an incredible amount of gas .Is the 75 the twin carb or 4 carb motor ? The newer 4 carb design is easier on fuel . Ild look for a 70 to 90 HP Mercury ..
