I have a 1960 Thunderbird 14', Hull# 48. I am looking for some more information or old photos. I have been unable to find anything on this boat. Thanks for your help. Riggs

Have you checked out the Thunderbird section in the Library section:

www.fiberglassics.com/library/Thunderbird

We might be able to help if you have photos to share. That can often times make it much easier to match up models and such.

Thanks for your reply Handy Andy.
I have looked in the library and no luck.
The boat is 14' LOA and 5' Beam. I do know it was built in 1960 and is Hull #48.

The most similar Thunderbird model pictured is the "Brave" in a 1957 Thunderbird ad. It looks like the "Brave" was made from 1956 thru 1961.

The hull looks good jriggs, nice work. Did you spray it, and what kind of paint did you use?

Riggs,
The hull looks great! I'm assuming you sprayed it yourself? Did you use and HVLP? I haven't tried spraying yet but I want too. How do you like the Awlcraft-2000?

Yeah I sprayed it and the Awlcraft works great. I use it a lot on boats. I think you'll like it and if I can spray it anyone can..haha. I sprayed 545 primer today on the top and plan on spraying the top coat tomorrow.

Re:1960 Thunderbird 14' 13 years 4 months ago #33227

Boy! that looks great! I really like that shade of red, could you please let us know what brand/paint code you used? also brnad for primer and such..

..and if you don't mind, since you did it yourself, would you mind giving a ballpark quantity and cost for materials (primer and finish coat) for that paint job? My lake N sea is about the same size and would really appreciate just a ballpark idea so I can wrp my head around what to plan for... and i realize and respect that some do not care to share $$ figures, and if you do not, that is cool.

Again, great job! looks like a fun ride!

sorry for the delay. I had my second child and been a little busy.
The Red is an Awl craft sun burst red. great color. I bought a qt. $180. I think. I had all the primer and the white and everything else from other projects. Red is high. I think real money I have $600. in the project. I had the motor its a 15hp Yamaha four stroke. It moves it pretty good for what i do with it. I have found this boat would hold 40hp. I am looking for an old 2 stroke T 40hp to try. Its pretty fun with the 15hp and with a 40hp its gotta be a blast! Thanks again for your comments. I am looking for the next project.

We had a 61 Brave when I was a kid. Max h.p. rating was 40 and it weighed 360 lbs. It was a runabout. Tough boat but what a pounder in the chop.

Thanks Paul. The boat did need a little weight in the front so I moved the fuel tank to the bow and it made a huge difference. She will eat the chop up and is faster now.

Mr Riggs

My father Richard C Cole designed all the original red and white Thunderbird boats from 1956 through 1960. The company was then purchased by Alliance Machine Co out of Ohio. And my dad continued to design the Cathedral hull models until the company was sold again
in 1969.
