TOPIC: Luger 'Lectric

Luger 'Lectric 13 years 5 months ago #30184

Bought this boat off of CL in early March for $300. It was advertised as a 1962 Sea King, but thanks to this site I was able to identify it as a Luger Sierra kit boat of early 60's vintage. I loved the lines the minute I saw it and had a definite vision of what it would look like when I was done with it. My friend Daris did the old paint removal (baby blue house paint), fairing, and paint, as well as providing the work space and body work experience. I bought the beer and fetched tools. Thanks to his manic work pace and attention to detail, it turned out better than my vision in a very short amount of time. The lakes that I like to frequent do not allow gas motors so we installed a Minn Kota 160EM on the gutted '62 Merc 80. Have been on the water twice now and can get about 8 knots out of it.
The whole process was a lot of fun and I learned a lot. I guess the most important thing I learned is... there is no such thing as a $300 boat.

Wow what a great looking boat. Are you not just the least bit tempted to get that beautiful Merc restored and running....drop the Minn Kota's, find another lake and take her for a rip? It certainly is the sportiest and meanest looking 8 knot electric troller I have ever seen.

Thanks Barnfinder. Unfotunately the lower end of the Merc was trashed, the motor pretty much stripped of anything useful, and I'm out of money. On the watch for a cheap gas motor for those other lakes.
Here's what it looked like just a month and a half ago....

I bet a lot of people give you dirty looks seeing you back that beauty down the launch ramp thinking you are going to run that boat on an electric only lake.

Enjoy!

For more fun, throw a pair water skis in it.
