TOPIC: Andrew (Andgott) - replicate decal?

Andrew (Andgott) - replicate decal? 13 years 5 months ago #30074

Andrew, you are the expert here with replicating logos. I wonder if you would have any ideas as to how I could make two decals like this one I took off a Holsclaw trailer I am slowly restoring. One side was completely white, but the other side was in decent condition. In taking it off, it ripped about where the "a" is, but I'm thinking there must be someway to clean this graphic up, then print it on self-stick paper for two decals? By the way, while the logo is about 6.25" long, I have a much bigger very high resolution one in my home computer.

Thanks for any help!

Frank

you can have the image digitized at any sign shop. they can then make custom decals from the scan. It would be thin vinyl but would look authentic.
any tears or damage could be corrected with PhotoShop or some other graphics file.

Yes T, I know that. I want to do it at home and avoid charges I do not have the $ to pay!

Frank

post the high res image and the exact dimensions you want & I will fix you up

did you want the rectangle included in the artwork or just the lettering

Re:Andrew (Andgott) - replicate decal? 13 years 5 months ago #30097

I don't know if I can post the hi res image here. Email me (frank dot alguire at gmail dot com), and I'll email it back to you soon as I get home.

Yes, I want the rectangle in medium to dark blue. I think with a cleaned up image I can buy some sticky backed stuff at Staples to run a couple off.

Thanks!

Sorry- I've been busy and haven't checked in!

I THINK that I've got the Holsclaw 'logo' digitized already as a vector graphic. I'll look for it tonight.

The cheapest way to get a reproduction is to have it printed on a bumper sticker- But this limits you size wise to no more than 11" x 3"- Which sounds like it'll work for you.

Other sizes can be made by a vinyl shop.

That would be great Andrew, thanks. Here's the "big" scan if you need it...

I didn't have a Holsclaw logo- But I do now!

It's a Vector graphic, so I can resize it to a billboard or bigger :)

I can resize & color it however you need it- Let me know what size/color you need it in. I can upload it to Zazzle, and they'll print it for you on a bumper sticker. That's how I did the stickers on my Gator- and they turned out great!

Re:Andrew (Andgott) - replicate decal? 13 years 5 months ago #30238

Wow! That looks great Andrew, thanks man!

The blue background is 6.25" X 1.75". The letters would be yellow, or close to it.

My first thought was to use Rustoleum. If I did, I would use these two colors: Rustoleum Protective Enamels ( www.rustoleum.com/CBGProduct.asp?pid=150 ) - navy for the background and sand (they don't have a good yellow) for the letters. See the photo here for what it should look like. I'm still trying to figure out what way to go on color, but Rustoleum is my first idea. I'm open to suggestions!

Here it is in LIVING COLOR-

The colors are probably CLOSE, though they may not be dead on.... It's tough to get it 100% when it's on a computer screen. The good news is the blue on the sticker is on a yellow fender, so if it's a bit off, it won't be too noticeable... A can adjust it if you think it needs it- Lighter or darker.

You can get them directly from Zazzle here-

www.zazzle.com/holsclaw_fender_sticker_bumper_sticker-128585339777628741

It'll come as a 11" x 3" bumper sticker- You'll just have to trim it to the correct size by cutting away the white...

When and if I restore my tiny little 'really old' Holsclaw with original glass covered lights built into the trailer and the wagon wheel-type wheels, and the original tie-down bar, etc I will surely love to have some original graphics. BTW I have the boat now on an newer trailer.

Even though I was not able to get any documentation from the guy who sold these to me out of a barn on the property he had purchased a year before, and I have not been able to even figure out the make of the boat yet, I do know that the Mark 55E is a 1955 and I have no reason to think that this was not an original package all from the same year. The search continues.

Here is a pic of it just after I found this beauty in a barn and got her home...before bath.

Re:Andrew (Andgott) - replicate decal? 13 years 5 months ago #30252

Thanks Guys.

As I said I have not been able to identify this boat since I found it about this time last year in a barn and did try hard last year in various forums. I also have done nothing with it besides put it on another trailer and covered it up. Will get back to it soon. BTW..in case you were wondering...$600 and totally original including the two merc tanks and a pair of wooden Wagemaker water skis that didn't looked used along with a twine ski rope with wooden handle etc. See if you can see the brass train whistle attached to the beautiful Kaner steering wheel.

I will also try again in the wood boat forums here to see if anyone can help.

I am going to take the Mark 55 down to Tim Calmes as soon as I can to go over the motor that I almost had started before the starter kicked the bucket.

But in the mean time here are some more pics before and after it's bath.

Rustoleum #7724 Sail Blue is as close a match as you'll find I believe, Frank. Still working on the "cream" or off white for fenders, winch stand, etc..

Great job on the sticker Andrew. ;)

I couldn't afford that much spray paint Mark! I need to find something from there quart containers ( www.rustoleum.com/CBGProduct.asp?pid=150 ) or some other company that makes user-friendly good paint. I need to check out Tractor supply. I've heard good things about their paint.

My bad, I figured any color they offered in the spray can would be available in a quart size as well. We live and learn, huh?

One of the guys on the MN Glastron forum did his in the new "hammer finish" Rustoleum, turned out pretty nice. It would help hide the imperfections, etc.. Wouldn't be the right color, but I'm considering it anyway. :woohoo:

Let us know what you find at TSC, I've heard good things about their paint as well. (Pretty tough stuff!)

Re:Andrew (Andgott) - replicate decal? 13 years 5 months ago #30266

Mark, thanks, but I'm not figuring on any imperfections. Other than a lot of surface rust, this steel is in excellent shape. No pitting that I've found after tearing the whole thing apart. I'm going for a nice shiny appearance. When that will be is a question, as I can't work on things straight through like I used to do. The old body requires breaks. I guess that's what my day job is for...

frank, just like you said, tractor supply paint is tough,we used it on our steel beams under our back deck years ago and its still in great shape, and the back of the house is damp for the 1st part of the day,its good stuff, john

Thanks for the help here Andrew, but that yellow is way too bright. I'm a ways off from needing these anyways, but how can we get that color more like the one in the brochure graphic, or like a color I could find for you on the net?

frank, can you try buyng a quart or so of white paint of your choice then just slowly add a some brown paint ,little by little,as you mix it,you should be able to get the exact color of tan that you need, for the trailer itself,(fenders ,tower winch, etc,)john

I can change it as needed... When you say 'too bright' do you mean it should be paler, as in adding more white, or more like a gold/orange color?

Re:Andrew (Andgott) - replicate decal? 13 years 5 months ago #30476

Andrew, what I think I would like is the Royal Blue for the background (top row, 1st on the left), then almond (2nd row, 2nd one from the right) for the letters: www.rustoleum.com/CBGProduct.asp?pid=150 .

Could you do that?

Thank you!

Frank-

This is using the colors off the Rust-Oleum page. I 'captured' the image, then used the 'eyedropper' tool in Photoshop to get the exact color. Of course, it's only as good as the color sample that they provide- It'll be interesting to see how close it is to the actual paint color-

So now what Andrew? Zazzle, or send it to me so I can run a couple off here? I don't know how it's going to look either, but it's going to be real close, and certainly good enough for me! Thanks you VERY much!

Cool! Thanks Andrew! I sure do appreciate it. Got the fenders in primer this a.m., want to let them dry a couple days, then start the topcoats. Doing enough painting today!

Is it 6.25" X 1.75" on the bumper sticker?

Yeah, the blue area should print to the proper size.... Just cut 'em out with a good pair of scissors, and stick 'em on.

I have stickers that I made that way for my Gator, they've held up nicely...

Those look nice!!

I'm currently looking in to a way to make similar labels on thin aluminum as well, without getting TOO pricey... The stickers seem to work pretty well, though, and I wonder if it's really even worth it, given the price difference. A sticker is a couple bucks, the aluminum tags would likely be $15-20 or so. Might be worth it in some cases.

I can always make the stickers LOOK like aluminum- You'd have to look REALLY close to tell.

Re:Andrew (Andgott) - replicate decal? 13 years 5 months ago #31163

I'd be willing to give that metal tag a try as a sticker. Who's gonna know except me and you (and of course everyone one else looking at this...)

Thanks!
