TOPIC: 1962 Glasspar Avalon

1962 Glasspar Avalon 13 years 6 months ago #28330

Let me start off by saying, I know nothing about boats. I have inherited a Glasspar Avalon 16ft boat from my Grandparents and I need to get rid of it. I am pretty sure it is a 1962. It has a 35hp Evinrude Lark motor, which to my knowledge, has not been started in over 35 years. The boat has been sitting in the garage for at least the last 35 years. For being almost 50 years old, the boat seems to be in remarkable shape. It has four seats which fold down into two benches. The seats have no rips or tears, they just need to be cleaned. They also appear to have been wrapped in plastic. Any idea what I should be asking for it? I have added one image below and added several links to others. Thanks for your help.

I wish it was on the east cost. She sure is adorable. Have you gotten in the boat? Does everything feel solid? Is it a fresh water use only boat? You need to find the person that wants a clean find like this one. It is not a 500 dollar boat but its true value is hard to determine. You have a super clean boat that is 48 years old but in condition extremely uncommon but now you have to consider an economy that is less than favorable for anything much less than a vintage boat.
There was a guy in VT. that had a similar Glasspar boat in original condition with a 1250 Mercury outboard on it he started around $4500 or so and I am not sure if it ever sold.
I would be delighted if a family member left me something like this I would baby it so much. Are you into boating or do you think you could be? You do have something quite special here that is not seen everyday.
I am sure some guys on the board here could give you a better idea of just might pop off an offer to you.

Best of luck to you. Super nice boat.

As far as I know, it was used in fresh water only. Yes, it is solid. I used to play in it when I was a child and was just in it about a week getting something out of it.

If you can post the number on the Galsspar plate on the dash to the right of the steering wheel I think I can pin down the year of manufacture and the plant it was built in.
Not common to find an original baot in that condition so it brings the value up....Glasspar was just about the biggest builder of fiberglass small boats at that time so it doesn't have an inherent collector value like some others so it brigs the value down. Hard call to put a dollar value on it.
Myself...wouldn't take less than $2000 for it but would be very surprised to sell it for $4000. Not a whole lot of help, I know. Thing is the old boat market is nowhere as standardized as the old car market so what you can sell an older fiberglass boat for pretty much depends on if the buyer wants that particular year and model.
"That's just like my dad's boat" would sell for a lot more than "Wow...cool old boat".
See the CF numbers...what area of CA are you in? I'm up north in Greenville, Plumas County ( and don't worry about that not ringing any bells....if you aren't here you probably don't know where it is ;<) ) Do know people in other parts of the state ad would be glad to pass on your desire to sell to anyone I now who is in your general area.
The Lark outboard is a 1959, by the way.

I am with Jim.
That is a super nice old boat that needs to be kept nice.
If there is any way possible to hang onto it and use it yourself, that would be my suggestion. Sentimental value plays a big part in such a prestine item. Once you sell it, even if you get a great price, you no longer have the boat.
Good luck to you and welcome aboard Fiberglassics.

X3!

I have to say there's a lot to be said for Sentimental value. That's why I kept mine and restored it, but I love boats and boating. Grew up on the one in my avatar. I'd keep it, clean it up, get it running and take it out.

Welcome aboard.

Thanks to everyone who responded. The boat is located in Sacramento, CA. Also, I will post the number on the Glasspar label next time I see the boat. Should be later this week.
