TOPIC: Biggest fins???

Biggest fins??? 13 years 7 months ago #26052

With so many different makes and models of "glassics" does anybody know which has the biggest/tallest (non-modified)fins?

I think the Cadilac Sea Lark is the tallest. But those fins are not fiberglass. There aluminum

How do you measure a fin? Height, spread, etc.? Lots of possible contenders. Take a look at the Vali IV, Space Craft Royal Flush or Saturna, and Bell Boy Banshee.

But having fins doesn't make a glassic. There are many cool vintage fiberglass boats without fins. Fins on boats results from the application of automotive styling to the recreation boating industry: the 1956 New York Boat show and the introduction of the Lone Star Meteor and Evinrude Lark concept boat. The very next year, bushels of boats with fins and even headlights showed up on the scene. The Meteor and the Lark blew many a mind and set the trend for the rest of the 1950's. Check out the following link for a period Sports Illustrated article discussing the trend: sportsillustrated.cnn.com/vault/article/magazine/MAG1132109/index.htm

The pre-1957 designs of Speed Queen (my profile photo), Crosby, Glasspar, and Endura Craft boats exemplify the earlier trend in fiberglass boats of copying the design of mahogany molded plywood or planked boats. And in doing so, they created quality, resilient boats that preserved the styling of the wood boat era for us to enjoy today, just as the automobile-influenced finned boats preserve the car desgins influenced by the space race.

I like Kevin's Sea Lark, but Don's Royal Flush is huge.

Does this one count? :) It's a one-off Glastron Glastron V-174, 1966. Here's the story.

KevFin's Bat Boat is in the hunt.
I can't recall but I think it was 42" from bottom of boat to top of fin.

This Ancarrow Praetorian may be a good candidate...

This Ancarrow finned runabout is from 1959/60.

They were designed and manufactured by Ancarrow Marine in Richmond, Virginia and were available with either single or twin Cadillac Crusader V-8's or Dearborn Interceptor V-8's. The Ancarrow Marine brochures used the caption "Going Places Fast" for good reason with twin 300HP Crusaders…

I just knew this was going to be a GREAT thread when I saw hotboat post it! I feel so inferior, fin wise that is. LOL Good thing I believe "fin augmentation surgery" would be blasphemy.

Are these Fins or " wings" ? Not the biggest but in my opinion one of the best designed boats.

How about the whimpiest fins?

This is a 1959 Thompson Bros. Boat Mfg. Co. 18'-8" Off-Shore Cabin Cruiser - wooden lapstrake. The only boat of Thompson to ever have anything slightly resemblinbg fins!

One of these days I shall get back to work on this rotten beast!

It would be interesting to know if there are any of these still out there. Here's a shot I found of one that I think was a fairly recent restoration.

An original brochure shot - I think...

A 1959 Ancarrow Consul recently sold in the Warner Collection Auction:

www.mecum.com/auctions/lot_detail.cfm?LOT_ID=MO1010-99680&entryRow=273

Over the years, an Ancarrow Aquilifer (missing its fins) showed up on E-bay for sale ( archives.fiberglassics.com/forum818/showmessage.asp?fm=Forum1&messageID=58315 ). The Aquilifer is the one with the rocket exhaust ports in the fins.

An Ancarrow Gladiator (utility model, no fins), under restoration, was posted on another forum. Awhile ago there were 5 Ancarrows in the ACBS registry. Maybe an ACBS member can look up the current count.

Handy Andy - Great information on the Ancarrow marque. I attended the Warner Collection Auction last October and remember the Ancarrow Consul 19' "Black Magic" which sold at auction for 35K not including hammer fees.

There are 3 Ancarrow's listed in the 2010 ACBS Membership Directory, a '57 Aquilifier 25', a '58 26' Runabout and the above noted Consul previously owned by F. Todd Warner.

It would certainly be cool to find an Ancarrow Praetorian if there was one out there.
