TOPIC: 16 Ft Dorsett Catalina Motor size

16 Ft Dorsett Catalina Motor size 13 years 7 months ago #25572

New here. Just bought a early 60's Dorsett Catalina. It has a 45 horse Chrysler on it. Does anyone know what is the biggest HP motor I can put on this boat. Thanks in advance.

On the original hull tags it list 85 H.P. I had a 40 H.P. Rude on mine when I got it and with Fuel and gear I had to get everything forward and it still had a hard time getting on a plane. I swapped it out for an 85 H.P. Frankenmerc and it jumps out of the water with plenty of power. Personally I would not want to go bigger than an 85 h.p. but I'm old ?? I don't go out if I can't take my time getting there. First picture is the 40 H.P. and the second is the 85h.p.

My vote is for an OMC J-E 70 - 75 looper. You can get parts everywhere, great on fuel, light weight, reliable, wide selection of props, plenty of power for a Catalina. You can get nice ones for less than $2,000, and if you take your time, good ones can be had for around 800 bucks. Correctly set up, it would cruise nicely at about 25mph, with a top speed near 35mph

Thanks, so many options. I actually have not picked it up yet. It is in a slip next to my Pacemaker 31ft money pit. I am going to get it this weekend

I had a Johnson '90 on my 1959. It was unstable at full throttle- around 30 mph, 4000 rpm- a lot of roll. I think trim tabs would have been the answer. You might want to hunt down a formula such as this one I don't think there's one on this site but it would be nice if we had some type of calculator the lawyers feel safe with. ;) http://www.fiberglassics.com/media/kunena/attachments/legacy/images/29-20110221.jpg[/img[img] www.fiberglassics.com/media/kunena/attachments/legacy/images/29-20110221.jpg[/img

I suggest using the Fiberglassics Library to determine manufacturers recommended maximum horsepower.
Find your boat year, check the brochures in the library for max horsepower, there you go.
