That is the question.

I got a 'new' outboard, as a project to keep me busy for the next few weeks while I'm on the ship. It's a 1957 Big Twin 35hp, in pretty good shape, at least mechanically- Although it was VERY dirty when I first got it, since it had been in a garage for years.

This is how it looks now-

My original intent was to strip it down, prime it, and paint it. But, after really cleaning it up, I am wondering if I should leave it original.

ALL the decals are there, and in great shape. It's got both emblems, although one is cracked. The paint is mostly intact- And I just discovered that the copper paint on the exhaust housing comes off with a little goo-gone and elbow grease.

So- Should I repaint? Or leave as is? It's not bad looking, kind of has a nice patina to it. I MIGHT just re-do the lower unit, and leave the rest alone...

My vote is to leave it, it's in GREAT shape-just maybe get what you can off the lower area. Thanks for the tip on the goo-gone - I've got a 57 Sea Horse that someone painted the lower portion burgundy.

I have got a 57 Sport Twin [10 Hp] a bit better condition and I bought it just for 'looks'.I do not have a boat to put under it.Put it on a stand a there it sits.Puts a smile on my face everytime I look at it.Having said all that I would paint below the hood/cowling and thats it.

Andrew,

Whatcha got planned for her? If you're gunna put her on an old fishin boat and put her to work then clean her up as best you can and GO!!!!!! But..... If you're gunna hang her on somethun purdy then bring her back to her Original beee-you-tee-full self.

I'm just sayin...
