I think I've found a good way to make them now.... I tried a couple of different resins and materials. Because of the glossy, domed surfaces, they are a little tough to photograph-

This isn't any particular 'real' badge that was ever used, but I wanted something quick to try out some gold on-

I've never used gold leaf before- It looks nice, but is difficult stuff to work with! This was my first real attempt at it- I'm getting better. I DID learn to make sure that you turn any fans off in the room :)

Here's another one with the gold leaf applied... This was an experiment to see how small of a line I could do with it-

The epoxy that I'm using now stays relatively liquid for about 2-3 hours, so the bubbles can work out of it. Once I got it 'down', it was easy- NO bubbles. Controlling the epoxy otherwise was a bit tough, though, it likes to flow all over. Finally, I just figured out that I pour it a little larger than I need the emblem, then cut it later. After 10-12 hours, it's mostly hardened, but can still be cut with a good sharp pair of scissors. It takes about 72 hours for a full cure, but even then it's not completely hard, it's still a little flexible.

I plan to mount the wheel caps on a thicker backing (probably plastic) so they are rigid.

It looks like this MIGHT just work- Which is good- I've got a couple of missing emblems to take care of!

Getting a little better with the gold leaf- It doesn't photograph well, if you get a reflection from it, there is usually too much glare in the epoxy dome-

John- You'll need some of these for your boat :)

The emblems look awesome Andrew, IMO! If everything works out on my new 1000, I'd like one of the Merc emblems just like you posted. (Just let me know what I owe you.) It's not a true "restoration" anyway, with newer pieces here and there, kind of a mild "FrankenMerc" if you will. And I love those colors together. Speaking of Thom, anybody heard from him? Haven't seen him around in a few days!

Color changes are a piece of cake- I did it in 'non original' colors just to try something out.

The only REAL problem is the gold- It is gold leaf, and has to be hand applied... It's a PAIN to get it right, so doing the lettering, etc in gold might not be a real option...

I'm also using an Inkjet printer for the trials. Sure, it works- But I worry about longevity of the pigments, even with the epoxy encapsulation. I'm going to use a different material for the future ones- One that is designed to be outside,

BEAUTIFUL merc, BTW.... I just bought a 1961 700, Can't wait till mine looks like that :)

Andrew
What is the max size you could make?
Could you make the Kiekhaefer emblem roughly the size of a football?
I think I could make a heck of a neat lamp base from them.

In theory, I could make a billboard size out of it.

When I digitize my graphics, I do it in Adobe Illustrator, The result is what's called a VECTOR image, which can be freely resized in any way I want to- From tiny to HUGE.

The only limitations, I suppose, would be the size I can print (though I can have it printed in whatever size, even posters), and the leafing/encapulation process... I've never done it that big before- I think it would work, but I'm not 100% sure.

I'll have to get some bigger paper and give it a shot- The biggest photo paper that I've got now is 4 x 6...

Here's an example of how I can scale a vector graphic-

Just the top of the E and the R...

It could be WAY bigger, too.

I'd need EXACT dimensions as to how big you need it....

Another way to do it would be a printed sticker, you could kind of replicate that brushed aluminum look that way. This is a different emblem, obviously, but gives you a rough idea as to what I'm talking about-

They can be printed on a vinyl sticker easily, I've got a few places that can do it for me. There is no 'doming' on them, although I am going to be experimenting with that soon, to see if I can do it.

Re:Emblems 13 years 7 months ago #24806

Size is 10 inches long by 1 3/4 tall at center and tapers to 1 1/4 at the ends (Arched)
Silver border on top and bottom side is is 1/4"
Border on Right End is 7/16
White bkgrnd is 1 1/4 in center and follows the arch. Over all length of the white area is 8 3/8

Star would fit in a 1" x 1" square

Vinyl Sticker would be GREAT!!! How much for a couple? When and Where do I send the Check??? :woohoo:

How's this-

The actual size one is here-

www.zazzle.com/lone_star_flamingo_bumper_sticker-128131882233223545

They will print it on vinyl, and send it right to you. It's printed on a standard bumper sticker, so you'h have to cut the outline out. Also, I think it will end up SLIGHTLY (perhaps 1/4" or so) narrower than your old emblem, due to the 'bleeds'.

Let me know if you need any changes to it...

Note that, since I am not printing it, I am not 100% sure exactly how it will look- It SHOULD be right, but it's beyond my control :)

I've got a couple samples made up-

{img] www.fiberglassics.com/media/kunena/attachments/legacy/images/GM.jpg [/img]

I've still got a few things to do to them before they are 'boat ready', but they'll certainly be ready to go WELL before it's time to rig the steering on the boat!

Glad to hear it- Post a photo if you get a chance. Since I have no control over the printing, I never know for sure how they turn out. I've done some of my own decals through them, and have always been happy.

Here's a pic of the label Andgott designed for my boat. It is absolutely perfect. I purchased 4 of them for $4.75 each. Andrew I would be more than happy to pay you for the design work if you would send me a bill. These are exactly what I wanted. Thanks for your artistic perfectionism.

Peter has had the evinrude and merc stuff avail for some time now as well as other motor specific items for restoration. His quality is oustanding. The more the merrier I suppose.
