TOPIC: new and need some help w/ identify

new and need some help w/ identify 13 years 8 months ago #24337

hello all, i am new here dont flame me to hard if i didnt post in correct section. im 38 years old and have decided after many years that i want to resore a classic fiberglass boat. figure its easier w/ a fiberglass than a wood for my first project. i am a manufaturing engineer in the oil and gas industry in Houston TX.

i found an old boat that i have yet to identify. old lady on site says its a 1950's roy rogers tri sonic....... she insisted and said she still has title and that the trailer was the original w/ the boat that belonged to her father.

please help me identify as i only have these pictures

Actor Roy Rogers was involved with Yellow Jacket Boat company. They were built at Denison, TX.

What you show in the pictures looks like a Glass Magic Nomad. Glass Magic Boats was located at Fort Worth, TX. Look in the "Clasic Library" section here on this site for old brochures, etc.... Bill Raschke had a US patent on that boat.

WesCraft Boats of Bazine, KS may have purchased the mold/tooling and rights to this model in the early 1960s when Glass Magic closed shop.

The Lone Star would certainly be a more multi-functional boat. The other one will be pretty limited in the types of waters it can navigate and the number of people it can haul.

Picture which one would be better for taking a picnic with the family or water skiing or for use as a fishing platform.

Re:new and need some help w/ identify 13 years 8 months ago #24346

i could not agree more, i will go and see if i can pick up the lone star for a fair price. $500 for boat and trailer sound about right? no cracks and transom appears to be good actually. thanks for the help. looking for ward to a full write up in near future, this will be a part time project that will take a long time im sure.

great info here on this site

I really like the Lone Star- They've got cool lines, and cool FINS.

Try to get it even cheaper- You might be surprised what you can get it for!

Re:new and need some help w/ identify 13 years 8 months ago #24348

I agree with Andgott. Looks to be a homemade trailer under the Lone Star- not worth more than the scrap value. Also, the boat looks to be missing most of its deck hardware. On the plus side, the windshield looks very restorable.

I am no expert but I would think without hardware and no motor it be a $100 max shell? thats just my opinion.

I also like the Lonestar. I agree with Andgott, I'll bet you can get it for less.

That first boat kinda looks like a late 60's Ouachita fishing/flats boat.

hardhead,

i'm about 99% sure that the old bassboat is a TX-made SKEETER or a close COPY of a SKEETER. - i had one that looked just like it in forest green in the early '60s w/Big Twin Johnson.
(look under the side decks for a dataplate - mine was on the port side, about 1/3 forward of the transom.)

IF it's a SKEETER, they are UNSINKABLE (SKEETER used to take one of their hulls & cut it into pieces with a chainsaw & the pieces would float.= good advertizing gimmick.) & excellent bayou boats.

looks more like a skeeter to me but there were several copys of that design....doesn't look much like a lone star to me....more like a copy of a red fish, but not a red fish either...don't know what it is john

Its closer to a Glass Magic than a Skeeter but I dont think it is either. Do you have a pic of the logo on the side near the back?

Your Skeeter looking boat is a Glassmagic and was built by William Raschke of Ft Worth, and I have a copy of the patent if someone wants it, shows all the drawings.
Application was May 13, 1957 and was patent issued on Feb 26, 1960
The hustler boat was built in Louisiana and was a copy of the Skeeter boat.
The first bass boat was built by Holmes A Thurmond in Louisiana in 1948, and I have a copy of that patent and lots of pic of the first wood Skeeter he built. I am building a Balsa wood model of that 1948 boat now.

Also, the wood Skeeter was only from 1948 to 1960, then Stemco from Longview Texas bought them out and started making the fiberglass Skeeters.

Your probably thinking about the Boston Whaler, it was cut in half for the un-sinkable advertising pic.

The cut it up with a chainsaw was Ranger
they chopped out 40% of the hull and hammered it up onto plane

Ranger may have done it also, but Boston Whaler has a video of their boat, the un-sinkables. I have had three of their boats and have seen the ads on the Un-Sinkable boat when I was a Whaler club Member.

Go to Google and key in Boston whaler the un-sinkable to see the videos

Re:new and need some help w/ identify 11 years 9 months ago #72531

wood skeeter,

WELCOME ABOARD!

I grew up about 35 miles from Longview and never even heard of a wooden skeeter.

I loved my dark green (i think 60 or 61) Longview-made boat w/BT for Caddo Lake & Lake of the Pines hunting/fishing.

I have to ask: HOW MANY wooden Skeeters were built? How many are believed to be LEFT?

If you will send me your email address I will lots of info and pics of the wood Skeeter. The first was built in La. by Holmes Thurmond in Shreveport in 1948. He owned Skeeter boat co.until approx 1960, then he sold it to Stemco in Longview in I believe in 1961. In about 1961 or 1962 they built the first fiberglass Skeeter.

Maybe this site is blocking my emails to you, because I now have sent over 30 emails to you and your not getting them because I have noticed in my sent folder it has
satx78247 @ fiberglassics.com in front of your personal email address, sorta strange this is happening!
Maybe I don't know but maybe you have some messages in your message center on here, I'm guessing at this point.
But I do know I have sent over 30 pics to you now TWICE.
