As you can see I started redoing my little boat.
Top is striped (had to bleach a few spots to get everything even. Currently put on barrier coat before I paint in next month or so.

I will post some more pics with barrier coat in a bit.

Has an old Scott Atwater 40hp on it, which still has compression!!!

Thought someone else would appreciate this pics.

Time for sleep!!!

Winner Plasticraft was one of the earliest, perhaps the earliest (subject of debate) fiberglass makers out there. That's a very interesting boat. Under the "library" you will find some information on Winner I am sure. With a wood deck, you must have a pretty early one. I've seen others aged as old as 1949 that were all fiberglass (deck and hull)

Kirb, Nice looking boat, good project. Question- your just painting the hull right? IMHO the top would look great with new stain and varnish. Of course I'm biased since I have a wood deck fiberglass hull boat myself. ;)

Can't wait to watch how it comes along.

Bob,

My plan is to stain the top. Granted the bottom paint needs to get on there first.
The plan is go white on the bottom, keeping with the orginal color scheme (I believe) of teh boat.
I was debating bottom paint. I was thinking interlux, but I am unsure which is the best, Perfection, Brighside. I believe putting antifouling paint on the bottom, as it will be trailer. It might hower sit in water for a few days at a time.

Comments recommenation?

Kirb,
I'm fairly new to this also. I like the Interlux products so far for paint and stain. There are plenty of good folks on here who can recommend better than I can. Just my experience so far.

Here is the thread on my restoration www.fiberglassics.com/glassic-forums/main-forum/1960-18-wagemaker-empire-clipper-restoration#13349

The deck is 11 coats of Epifanes Wood Finish Gloss and one coat of Epifanes Clear High Gloss Varnish. The paint you see on the inside of my boat is Brightside with rustoleum Black speckles. I'm going to repaint the Bronze antifouling on my hull eventually. Probably once the season is over. I'm still trying to get it done by the end of this month to get it in the water and running. Wife put a deadline on it!

Here is couple photos with 4 coats of Interprotect 2000E, more going on, probably 8-10 coats total.

Thinking of Perfection or Brightside for bottom paint, white in color.

Kirb,
Just so you know the Perfection and Brightside are technically topside paints, per the manufacturer. The brightside is definitely for above the water line.
Godelescher poste a great series about boat painting but I can't seem to find it anymore. All his threads are empty. Maybe someone has it stored and can send it to you. Unfortunately I didn't get a copy of it. :(

Re:Vintage Plasticraft Boat - 1945? 14 years 1 month ago #13725

Kirb,

Look into Interlux VC Performance Epoxy. It is a 2 part paint that goes on very easy and can be wet sanded. I did the hull of my Tomahawk (sanded to 1200) with that and has been a great finish. The top I did in Perfection and I'm not overly impressed.

Great looking boat. I love the Scott on it. Here is a pic of another 1940's vintage hand laid fiberglass boat I think it is called a beetle. They laid the boat up and gel'd it afterward. Build for Armageddon no doubt.

Bottom paint looks great. Can't wait to see how it looks when the deck is finished. Did you get the Scott running?

Aquatech,

I have not got the scott running yet. Think I will leave until the spring. Need to replace the plug wires before I do anything.

Anyone know where I can get plug wire for a 40hp Scott Atwater?

I though I would link the new post to old for a complete thread track the boat restoration.

www.fiberglassics.com/glassic-forums/2-main-forum/43518-my-winner-plasticraft-is-looking-good.html

Varnish is going on next weekend, at two coats. That is all I do in two days with flagship varnish. Also bedding the splash rails with 3m 4200 as well as the side moulding as seen the earlier pics in this thread.

More later after a few coats of varnish.
