Saw this for sale on Craigslist and lucky enough to get it for $250 from original owner since new he haven’t start it for 20 years . He said it is only use in fresh water when he had it now he is old and can’t use it anymore. I like to try to fire it up but what should I check first, it’s a 3 hp don’t know the year .

A folding 3hp with the case. Looks to be in good condition, at least cosmeticly.
Spray some fogging oil down the carb & into the cylinder. Pull it over several times to get it distributed throughout.
Check gear oil to be sure there is some.
Check for spark, old coils sometimes crack apart.
50:1 oil ratio.
See it it fires.
Very likely carb will need cleaning.
If it runs, check for cooling water from the exhaust relief ports & for any fuel leaks.
Expect to replace water pump.

That is a sweet little kicker motor. I have never seen one like that. With that being said, it is definitely worth some time and money to make it usable. I have spent my whole life on the Mississippi and never seen anything like it.

Is any water coming out with the exhaust? I don't know if there is an actual "pee hole" on these small Jonny-rudes.

It doesn't matter if water is coming out or not. Replace the impeller. They should be replaced every couple years. If the impeller is old the rubber is probably dried out and ready to crack if it hasn't already.

It should be just above the lower unit. Find the model number and go to www.marineengine.com/ . They have exploded views of most engines so you can see generally how they go together. I have attached a picture from marineengine.com that looks like your motor.

If it was my motor I would.

Yes you do.
If for no other reason than peace of mind.
Also, give me a model number and I will tell you the year. It looks like a 65-66-67. If the engine were mine I would be running it on a 24:1 ratio since that series still had the old 3-ring pistons and plain bearings. You will never lose an engine due to using a bit more oil.
As far as the pee hole goes there is none. ON that engine you will either see a series of small holes on the backside of the exhaust tube or narrow V shaped slots. Exhaust pressure catches some of the spent cooling water and carries it out these holes or slots. Will or should look like a heavy mist with droplets here and there.
The oil drain on that gearcase is also the fill port. There should be an identical screw farther up that should say "level" by it. Remove this as well. Fill from the bottom until the oil exits the upper port.

You may want to continue this conversation down in the J.E.G.O forum. It is Johnson outboard specific.

I was hoping someone will say no because I can’t get those thing out that’s on the rod before pulling the impeller cover of , I try to get over the Johnson area . Sorry

Brownish may be okay and may also mean a small amount of water in the gearcase that has been there for a while.
Do you mean the water pump cover screws? If so I would try the best fitting screwdriver you have and use lots of downward force when you try to back them off. They are small so do not shear them. You may need an impact driver to help or a bit of heat or both. Turn the gearcase upright and use some wood scraps in a vice to clamp it. Try not to damage the finish as that is one of the nicest originals I have ever seen...would be a shame.

it looks like there is a roll pin that will need to be tapped out with a small hammer and a punch. Light taps should get it and don't lose your pin! Your photos are a great reference for putting it all back together correctly.

With that being said take note of the direction of the curl or bend in the blades on the old impeller. Your new impeller will have straight blades, it is imperative your push the blades the same direction when reinstalling everything or the pump will not work correctly and you will destroy the new impeller if ran for any length of time.

If you have difficulty removing the coupler pin there is another way. You can simply slide the driveshaft up and out of the gearcase. The downside of this is that the 3hp is about the only engine that is a son of a gun to get the pinion gear lined back up to accept the driveshaft again but patience always prevails. If you do this then the impeller will slide off the bottom of the shaft. Watch out for the small impeller drive pin. Do not lose it and make sure it goes back into the assembly. Always liberally lubricate the impeller housing screws on assembly and wipe the inside of the impeller housing with a small amount of lubricant as well. With the housing straight up and down rotate the driveshaft clockwise to get the blades to load into the impeller housing correctly. Hold and press down on the housing while you rotate with the other hand. Piece of cake this way.

One of the pics you posted of the center section (aka exhaust tower) has 4 holes drilled in it, water coming out of the discharge side of the block should be forced out of those holes, in a fine spray. You can also feel the cylinder head or the block to see if the powerhead is getting really hot. It should be lukewarm (except the exhaust manifold cover, it'll get quite warm). If the block is too hot to touch, that's way too hot.

Covered that with him back on post 102. That is why the photos were produced.
Hopefully he has the impeller in by now.

Thanks all for all of the great way and information on this subject. I start it and live how it ran it is such a beautiful engine I think I’m going to spend money to get someone that know what they are doing instead of me messing it all up .
