TOPIC: Rusted trim bolt help

Rusted trim bolt help 3 years 5 months ago #144416

I took a piece of window trim off my boat and the bolts broke of course but any tips on unfreazing these bolts so i can slide them out of the channel? I'll have 50 ish to do and the trim pieces are really long. I'm a tad overwhelmed at the moment and any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

First thing to do to stuck bolts is get their attention. That's done with a hammer. Several hard swats does the trick about half the time. Another trick is drill a 1/8" hole next to the bolt at an angle pointing toward the threads. Then stick the thin "straw" spout of a can of WD40 in the hole and spray liberally. Another attention getting swat or two afterward won't hurt. If none of that works, cuss, drink a beer and take a nap. Welcome to vintage boating!

What i really need is some chemical to dissolve the corrosion so I have a chance at speeding up this process, at this rate it'll take me 125 more hours to get these out, anyone know of a product, thanks

What are your rails made of ? I've used straight apple cider vinegar to eat rust between nuts and bolts to get them apart. If the rails are aluminum and bolts steel ? I don't know what the apple cider vinegar will do to the aluminum.
My application took a few days for the apple cider vinegar to work.
