TOPIC: Rubrail

Rubrail 3 years 5 months ago #144333

Restoring a 1958 Fiberglide. I have looked all over the net for a similar rubrail. Do any of you guys know where I can find vintage rubrail ?
The only option I have found is having it special made, very costly !
Thanks

Looks close to the profile I ordered for my custom craft. Profile # ½ G-2 . Could be a good starting point. PDF scan attached, upper row right.

Wefco called me this afternoon, they do have all of the rubrails. Right now the rubrails come in black only, 6-8 week lead time. For what I'm needing is 5.50 per ft
not sure what the black rubrail will look like on the whit hull, seafoam blue topcap but it may have to do.

Did they provide any reason for discontinuing the white?

I had the same issue with Wefco, and they didn't really supply me with an answer beyond "we aren't doing white anymore". That's a problem, as far as restorers like me see it. These boats need white rubber...it just doesn't look right with black.

Who wants to help me on a project?

I say we get a group of people together here on the board and other places (FB, etc) who will call once in a while asking for a specific rubber order, then mention at the end that you want it in white....they'll say no, we don't do that...then say something to the extent of "gee, that's a shame...I'm going to have to figure something else out then. I have to have white rubber."
I have a feeling with enough people calling eventually they'll get the idea that they are missing out on a good deal of potential business without doing white rubber, and perhaps they'll start again.
For those who don't know, literally all they have to do is order white rubber stock which they then pull through their cutting die. It makes no difference if black or white, they don't make the rubber, they merely shape it into a profile. There is no reason they can't still do white. But they have all the profiles, so they kinda have us all by the balls when it comes to properly restoring our Glasspars and other fiberglassics that require it.

All it takes is a phone call. Join me?

No they didn't say, black is all they extrude now is what they told me. I would have rather had white also.
5.50 a foot in black for what I need

Looks like you must have a raised seem where the gunwale meets the hull. That’s the same problem I had restoring my 1976 Enterprise Runabout. Did you end up buying the product you mentioned? I bought a radial rubrail from LFS Marine at www.go2marine.com . It’s black and looks like it’ll work. I’ll let you know if it does. I should receive it on Friday.

Yes, the boat has a raised seam, 3/4 or about. The boat is glassed together on the inside
