TOPIC: Gale pressure tank

Greetings. As an avid old boat and motor restorer I’ve stumbled upon something unique and am looking for any input. It’s a 6 gallon Gale pressure tank w U.S. Navy spec. Anything? Thanks.

Probably a Johnson/Evinrude two hose pump tank. There are some of them around yet. Don't know what a Navy spec would be different. Always wondered about government procurement. They send troops out and sailors on the water with products made by the lowest bidder. Is it olive green?

I tried to download pix. They appeared when created posts but didn’t transfer to forum. The tank has solis steel extensions that raise up around the curved sides almost as if stackable or for a seat.

Yup, ya got it.
Never seen anything like that before. Does the tank lift out of the outer portion? Be interesting to google the numbers. First guess is that it could be a seating option like you suggested, the Navy number is probably just for the oil since there are prentices around the oil info. |

To me it looks like it is stackable. Just my guess. Boy, check out that gas/oil ratio. Back then they used regular motor oil, but talk about a smoker!!

No those two extensions are spot welded to the tank and another tank doesn’t fit as a stack. Obviously meant for Navy use but not in a combat area due to its color. Pressures up so I’m going to strip, paint and try to get decals made. I have a 56 Johnson 30, a 57 Johnson 35 and a Golden Javelin that I’ve restored so maybe it’ll go w one of them for character. Unless someone has a good reason not to.

Odd thing is Johnrudes pretty much all had fuel pumps by 58 and Gale had them years earlier so being built by Gale but not branded Johnson or Evinrude is the head scratcher.

I know nothing about military spec. My guess is that it appears to be more for physical protection of connections and caps from anything and everything getting thrown around near it weather in storage, transport or in use. You could stack anything flat on it and not break anything on the tank so you wouldn’t break a fitting or cap every other day. Just a guess because I am reckless.

I had thought the same thing. Maybe someone will see it and have some knowledge of its purpose. Seems rather rare.

I was also thinking if it slid horizontally into a cavity with a flat top, it could keep the can from bouncing around by somewhat captivating it... yet still allow for access to things because I remember Dad’s pressure tank had to have the fill threaded lid loosened or it would create a vacuum and stall the motor. It also had the thumb pump button to prime before starting. Just trying to think of logical and practical reasons. Rare for sure as I have never seen a civilian tank like that. Pretty cool.
