TOPIC: Lower Unit Grease Quanitity?

Hi

Although the manual for my Merc 500 (1599010) lower unit says:

Inject EXTRA DUTY lubricant into gear case until excess lubricant starts to flow out of air vent screw hole

It gives no indication of the quantity required. How many tubes should I purchase?

I don't remember right off hand, but I would buy 2 to make sure. Whatever you don't use now can be used in the future to check for water, ect.

Its Murphys law. If you buy one, it will need more. If you buy two, one will work. Gotta take that chance!

Your Merc 500 should hold about 15 oz of gear oil. Allow a bit more for overflow/venting air bubbles.
The least messiest way to get 'er filled is to pick up a quart of Hi-Vis Marine-Grade gear oil from Walmart or NAPA and also get a pump which fits the jug o' lube.

Pumping the oil in is so much easier than messing around with those doggone tubes. West Marine would also be a good source for gear oil and hand pumps. You can buy a pump that screws into the drain hole, makes it a cinch.
