TOPIC: Tempo or other oversized fuel tanks

Tempo or other oversized fuel tanks 5 years 7 months ago #139127

Has anyone ever seen or used one of these tanks with the Mercury logo/decal? This is from marineengine's site. Looks like they made them in the vertical and horizontal orientations. If anyone has either, please post puctures. Or if you only have the pictures, please post them here.
I bought a mark 75 and it came with a "Mills long ranger" 12 gallon tank. I'd love to get it functioning again but it is missing some parts (float mechanism, etc.) I'm guessing many of these big oversized tanks were made by Tempo (and possibly others) for outboard manufacturers and maybe they share some parts. Does anybody know of a source for parts for these? Does anybody have a parts diagram for the Mills tanks?
Thanks for any input!
Scott

Hello Scot,

I have the 12 gallon vertical tanks on my 59 Glasspar Seafair Sedan.

The original owner told me he bought them in 1962 with the 61 Merc 800 although they did have any decals when I got the boat. I knew they were manufactured by Tempo and had heard that Mercury private labeled them and that ad is the proof.

Thanks,
Terry

I am in the process of installing one in my Glastron. Sending units are readily available form your local marine supplier, or rad shops that do gas tanks, or if the fill is visible you can get a gauge built into the cap. Keep in mind there are different grades of fuel hose for above and below deck, anti-siphon hose barbs and Oetiker clamps clamps should be used.
Cheers
Bill

Hey Robby,
I keep my boat at Myers Bay on Pistakee Lake just across from Bay View Marina.

Does your tank have the Mercury Kiekhaefer decals? If so please post a picture.

I would like to have them replicated. And be careful so I don’t have to stand on my head to see it. ;)

Thanks,
Terry

Though my Merc is a 71 Kiekhaefer that the tank was used for, the tank is newer and has Mercury marine written on it. Sorry that my memory was not so good as I thought it was older. I will ask my friend to check his horizontal 18 gallon tank that came out of a 66 with a 110 Merc. I will find out if it is a Tempo or Kiekaefer.

Wow! Yeah! Holy Smokes! all the pictures are right side up! :P
Those tanks can't be that old since the address has a zip code. Anyone else 'member when zips didn't exist?

Hey Terry, nice boat! Are your tanks permanently mounted? if so, how did you ground them?
Thanks

Thanks Bill,

The tanks are just sitting in the well and held in place by the length of fiberglass unistrut and elastic cord that is hooked on each side.

What’s interesting is the tanks fit side by side exactly in the width of the well. Makes me think Glasspar designed the well to fit the tank dimensions.

As to grounding the tanks, I’m not sure how that would be accomplished.

Terry, as I mentioned above, I'm putting a tank under the deck of the Glastron, I did not know what a can of worms I was opening. A buddy of mine is a marine mechanic certified by ABYC. He informed me I would need to install a blower and bond the tank. This lead to hours of research and much confusion on my part. I think I'm getting it sorted, but I believe if you refuel your tanks in place, they should be bonded. You may want to look into that. That might be a good thread to start for those of us with permanent tanks.

Dr Go!,
Thanks for the good pics! Is that a tank you currently have hooked up or is that one you would be willing to part with. I see you're in Wisconsin. I'm in Madison.

Thanks for the good pics guys!

I do not presently have that tank hooked up. The tank had almost a full tank in it when I bought a complete boat. The motor had recently run on that gas before I bought it. Since it was from the previous fall, I used the gas in my old tractor that can drink just about anything just to be safe. I originally pulled it to use in an older boat I have hanging in the garage and sold the boat it came in. The old boat was hanging in the garage so I had not measured it. The more I consider it, the more I think the tank is bigger than practical for my little boat. It would be like adding the weight of a full size adult and this is just a 4 seater a little more than 13’. I live a little over 2 hours north of you off of hwy 39. I pass through Madison at least 6 times a year. I will double check the measurements and if it doesn’t fit either of my boats, I may consider parting with it. I probably should ask the owner of the boat it came out of if he wants it, but he runs small water and portable tank. What were you thinking? PM me if you like.

I think you are right. I accepted, so maybe it will work. If not, just drop another note here.
