TOPIC: 1960 Glasspar ??

1960 Glasspar ?? 5 years 7 months ago #139063

Hi,
Today I went to look at what was advertised as a 1960 Glastron Starlight..figured it was a typo but went anyway. After looking at it, I am sure it's not a Glastron. The title shows 1960 Glasspar 15' but I can't find any info about one that looks like this. Also interested in any info on the Mercury engine. Owner said it was an early 2000's engine..anyone know? Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
John

I'm no expert, but looks like a Tomahawk Ski-Mate to me.

It's a 1960 Tomahawk Ski Mate. Missing lots of stuff. What's with the crash pads?

Thanks for the quick response and info. I assume this is your boat in the photos and are correct it's a 1960 Tomahawk Ski Mate. The man who has it said he stripped it down and did all the restoration work over the last two years. Strange he thought it was a Glastron based on photos he saw on the internet. When I told him it was not a Glastron he seemed surprised. The title shows 1960 Glasspar which is wrong too. He buys old cars and boats and restores as a hobbybut does not seem knowledgeable about
antique boats. I don't know why he installed the crash pads but will ask why he configured it that way. It has a hole in the top of the bow that appears to have been from the factory. When asked, he said it was to hold a flag. Does yours have one? Do you know if any original parts are still available like windshield, steering wheel, guages, or emblems since if I buy would like to put it back to original. Any idea what it might be worth.
Thanks again,
John

This is the second ski mate I've rebuilt. "Original" is subjective when it comes to old first generation glass boats. Whatever was on the shelf or could be purchased from manufactures in bulk were used. When that supply ran out the builders just used others.
The white one has the original hardware. The original steering wheel was no doubt a cable pulley system. the push pull that is on there now is far better and I would stick with that. The hole in the bow could be from just about anything, spotlight? air horn? flag? I don't believe the ski mate came with seat back aft. I've seen some with backs and others without. Filling holes is a pretty easy project but then you have to match paint etc. If you like the boat get it and enjoy it. I'll bet the padding on the dash is hiding some pretty nasty holes from gauges, radio switches et al.
Both ski mates I've rebuilt have been basket cases but boats with fins are popular on the classic glass market. A junker could be around $200 - $500 with trailer, no motor. Depending on the buyer for a restored one probably around $4000. with trailer and running motor.
Windshields are pricey but still obtainable, figure 'round $250 if you can find one. There are guys on the site here who have them.
If you like it, get it and enjoy. Any restoration you can do in an off season.
The white one has a '78 Evinrude 70hp. It's a 1960 and has the molded front seat backs. The orange one is a '57-59 (could never figure it out) but has lower, smaller fins with no seat backs or windshield.
The orange one had a 135hp Evinrude. She was a gas to drive but you couldn't stop too fast otherwise it would swamp.

Thanks you are a wealth of info. Do you think the 25 hp Mercury is underpowered for just cruising..no skiing planned? Sure wish it had the brightwork. Are the emblems available? Were they metal or decals?
Thanks for your help.

If you're just going to cruise that 25 will be nice. Probably better on gas also. The older motors use more fuel and dump unused gas overboard. If you find that you want a little more git-up-n-go you can upgrade the motor. Don't know where you live but I'm sure a local Craigslist will have plenty of used motors with controls. They are not that difficult to refit. The steering that you have is a universal hookup so no matter if you decide to change motors the steering will work.
The emblems were molded plastic that were pop riveted to the outside of the fin, there might be some reproductions around or you can just google the Tomahawk emblem and find some decals. If I need any lettering or logo reprints I go to a local sign company that does the vinyl lettering for the sides of trucks etc. If you have a Fast Signs business around they can make a set up also. They also do the registration numbers etc and prices for me were usually $30 -$50 depending on what I neededl

Thanks again for all the info. It seems the more I learn, the more questions I have. Do you know where the HIN is located on this model and the meaning of the digits. Since the boat was advertised as a Glastron but the title incorrectly stated it as a 1960 Glaspar, the title would need to be corrected. I'm going to check with the state Monday on this. I have so many questions, I would like to discuss if it's appropriate and you agree. 210.386.9018

The hull number would have been stamped on an aluminum tag nailed to the inside of the transom close to where the fins are. Probably missing for a long time since the previous owner couldn't register it properly.
I don't know how TX handles boat registration but here in WI you can get the registration corrected easily. Best to go right to your local DNR office or what ever it's called, and bring the title, bill of sale or other documentation you have and also maybe some of the pictures of a Tomahawk that you can rip off the internet. There are just normal people behind the counters. They can assign a new number to the boat. Here in WI they don't require a title for anything under 16', just a registration with a card to carry.
Cal
As a side note if you look at the white boat you will see that I raised the transom so I could put a long shaft motor on it. It initially came with a 15" transom. If down the road you want to upgrade to a long shaft motor it's really not that difficult to do if you're a little handy with some basic tools.
