TOPIC: Compression Relief on 1960 Lark-II 40hp (keep it?)

Compression Relief on 1960 Lark-II 40hp (keep it?) 7 years 3 days ago #134415

My "old timer" mechanic is putting together my 1960 Evinrude Lark-II, 40HP. I dropped off new rings, a new piston, points/condensers, full gasket kit etc. I am pretty busy with work, and there are too many bits and pieces for me, so please don't give me grief for that ;-).

Anyway, so out of left field he asked me about leaving the compression relief mechanism off when he reassembles it all. I know the mechanism only is engaged with the pull rope. He said in his experience that the carbon buildup in the cylinder can break loose and lodge in the "seats", thereby not allowing a good seal.

What is the group consensus on this; looking for a second opinion. He also said he wanted to "gut" the thermostat; "you don't really need that here in FL... Looking forward to the comments.
