I have a Clymer, Mercury Outboard Shop Manual for 45-225 HP, 1972-1989. It is practically unused, doesn't even have greasy fingerprints. I will send it to whoever wants it. First to PM me gets it. I will send it by US mail book rate so it will take a while to get there.

Thanks a ton. Is there a way I can pay you for shipping? Do they still do a COD? Cash on Delivery?

Shipped today (Wednesday) priority mail. Should be delivered Saturday July 1st. I found that the book rate by weight was about the same as the priority flat rate. If you do not get it I will PM you the tracking code.

Thanks a ton. I will use it right away to track down the underhood oil tank cap and wiring. The motor ran "jumpy" ... hunting high and low when I had steady throttle so I pulled back to shore. My day was done when I discovered the plastic oil cap cracked and my powerhead was dripping in oil bath. That was season end and I am just now getting around to looking at it soon. I hope a new cap and thorough cleaning will do the trick. Hope I didn't suffer any electrical damage like a stator. I can read and understand, but my brother is the real mechanic. I just got a new reverse gear off e-bay and bearings etc for the 1965 merc that we will put in soon. It will be nice to have reverse again. Gotta keep this old stuff in good shape or the kids might rather throw it away if I let it turn into junk.

Got home late last night from a 1,400 mile road trip to see family and found Christmas had come in July when I checked my mail box...can't thank you enough for the kind offer! Even after about 12 hours on the road and it being 11pm, I still had to check out a few pages. The outer package was a bit tattered from a few tosses, but the book made it unharmed. My old Mercury thanks you.

I am hoping it will help me with the more simple things that maybe I can learn. I will likely leave any serious stuff to the pros. Wonder how many hours a 1987 2.4 litre 200 Merc could log with reasonable health? It was 10 when I bought it and I have logged maybe 60-70 hours a year for 20 years. It was rough from previous owner and bearings went on on a connecting rod and damaged crank at 6 years of ownership. It got repaired in California since I could not afford a new one. So about 14 years after repair and about just under 1000 hours since then and maybe 1,400 by me. No idea of hours from previous owner. I just try to winterize properly and treat it reasonably... so I wonder every year of what is realistic to expect from the remaining life of this motor? A replacement is not in my budget.

1000 hours is not unreasonable, and with care it can be much longer. The average boat owner uses their boat about 100 hours a year. So that's ten years. so you are looking at 20 years at 60-70 hrs/year. So the engine has been used gently if it only has less than 1000 hours. Besides, routine maintenance can really extend that. I had a 1980 Johnson 2 horse that went 30 years before needing serious work. Like you I didn't use it much. Mainly for fishing with a 12 foot boat, on small lakes, and occasionally as an auxiliary on a 17 foot sailboat (my wife insisted on it) It just keep on running. Now I have a 4 horse Mercury (a Tohatsu under the skin) and a 2.5 horse Suzuki. I seriously doubt either one will last 30 years. And I forgot my Mercruiser 165 (a GM 250) it's 43 years old. still runs great. Has a coolant leak right now but That's not a difficult fix.

Thanks for that feedback. My hours are from skiing pulling teenagers knee boarding, wake boarding, skiing and barefooting about 70 percent of the time and half of that had to be pulling 6 to 12 at the same time so lots of grunt work. 20 percent doing high speed runs at max rpm on a 1,000 pound 20' boat. About 10 percent cruising/fishing. There were days of pulling skiers 6-7 hours before the kids would give me a bathroom break... I am too old to go that long now without a break. I will just keep the inspections and maintenance going and see what happens. My 51 year old 100 hp merc is still running, but I have no idea of its past... no hour meter and also no tach. Happy 4th and great boating. Great to hear of the long service of your small outboards. I also am still running my 1978 merc 20 I bought in high school. When you make 40 bucks a week it takes a long time to save up... had to get a $300 dollar loan from both my Dad and older brother to add to my 300 to get it... then pay them back. Maybe that is why I could never sell it as it was my first big purchase that took lots of labor sweat to get at 17 years old.
