On Saturday at the Door County boat show there was a boat in the water called "torpedo" that the owner said he built and was a one of a kind design. Beautiful job and I think it took best of show. I told him I've seen that style and design before and he said no, it's original. Here are a few pics I took several years ago at Geneva Lake boat auction in WI. What is it.

Have never seen one of these in 60 years of boating, but to me it is different and ugly!!!

If it's not a Ventnor ? It's awful close to looking like one ?

It reminds me of the Auburn Boattail Speedster. Do you know when it was built ?

redfishpirates,

It looks like a cross between a Ventnor & a Chris COBRA to me, but then I"M FAR from an "expert".

yours, satx

I've been corresponding with the fella, he said it is a Glen L design that he built himself. Hard to convince me it's not a rip of the original Ventnor. Either way it's a cool looking boat. Here's a link to the design and follow the starboard side of the page for his facebook for more pictures.

We're talking about two different boats here. The boat in the photograph from the Lake Geneva Show is indeed a Ventnor. They were produced right after World War II. There are still a few of them around including a couple of fully varnished 23 foot models with twin engines. There's one up here in northern Minnesota. The other boat, the one on the Glen-L website, is a home made boat from Glen-L plans (Roberta's Glen-L). It was up here at the ACBS International Show on Gull Lake last September. Beautiful workmanship on a great design. This boat was written up in Classic Boating or ACBS Rudder, I can't remember which one, but it is an interesting story of overcoming the challenges of building from plans that hadn't been test-built before. These boats are very similar in style, but very different in execution. I'll see if I have some photos of the Glen-L boat somewhere. You know, I'm no expert either, but I'm familiar with both of these very similar boats.

Lee, I believe this is the Glen-L you are referring to that was at Gull Lake.
The craftsmanship was amazing.
I don't have any photos with the engine hatch down.

Don, that's the boat I was referring to. It was at the Door County Maritime Museum show this past week. I talked with the owner and found out it was a 40 gallon gas tank and I seriously questioned the wisdom of putting that tank inside the motor box without even a smidgeon of fire break.
