1959 Dorsett Catalina - pictures and questions. 8 years 3 months ago #123751

I have posted a few pictures - as you can see i have taken out the old transom wood and have two layers ready to be glued and screwed together in there. I cut out the old rotted floor and will 'scab' on some extra wood on the stringers.
Today i removed the bulkhead into the cabin and laid out - i have a friend who is an excellent woodworker who will recreate this section.
My question mainly is for the cabin storage units and the side 'shelfs' in the back - I was planning on grinding/cutting out the fiberglass which connects the wood to the hull - then replacing the wood and re-fiber glassing it back in place - does this sound ok to you? Was going to do the same thing on the side 'shelfs' in the back. I would really appreciate any comments, advice, suggestions

What kind of plywood are you using? It looks like standard A/C plywood sheathing. I recommend you use high quality 3/4" 9-ply meranti marine plywood. (Call Al Jernigan at World Panel Products, 252-794-9944)

Totally cover one side with 3M 5200 using a 1/8" grooved trowel and then sandwich together with copious stainless screws. Treat the finished assemblies with two coats of CPES, heavy on the edges. I always coat the bottom edges with 5200 as well...good insurance.
