The original spongy foam on the inside of my cowl (1966 100 Hp Johnson Golden Meteor) is beginning to deteriorate. I'm actually amazed it has lasted this long without damage.

Are there recommendations for replacement products that could actually reduce the noise better over the original foam?

Thanks,
David

Dynamat - works great to quiet hot rod car interiors - should work well.

Yeah I used the 3/4" foam at Joann Fabrics and it worked a little but the dynamat should work good even if not original.

Dynamat for sure. I used that inside the cover of a Johnson 30hp (2cyl). It not only made an improvement in the overall noise level but also seemed to smooth out difference between the high and low tones. Be sure to cover the whole of the inside. The original foam was only on the cover sides but I put it everywhere and I think that was worth the extra work.

Thanks Everyone.

Here is the official response I got from Dynamat.

We recommend two products for the cowl on your outboard: Xtreme and Hoodliner.

First, install the Xtreme. This product will damp any vibrations/resonations in steel, fiberglass, or wood panels to reduce structure borne noise.

Over the Xtreme, install our Hoodliner. Hoodliner is a 3/4-inch-thick, peel and stick, acoustical foam with an aluminized Mylar face that will help to reduce airborne engine noise and heat.

Of course, all the old insulation and old adhesive will need to be removed before installing Xtreme and Hoodliner.

Please let us know if you have any other questions.

Best regards,

Cool Dave I'll have to check that out. The 3/4" foam I installed isn't staying on very well and it's still pretty loud so I may switch if it isn't too expensive.
