TOPIC: 1970 Olson

1970 Olson 8 years 5 months ago #121802

Hello,
I'm hoping for some insight on a boat I'm considering buying. It's a 1970 Olson 17' I/O.
The hull is beautiful and appears well taken care of. My main concern is the motor. It's an I/O 110 hp
Volva Penta 4 cylinder with dual carbs. The seller is sending a video of the motor starting and running
Which I hope will show enough to encourage me to make the 3 hour drive to inspect it. The seller says it's been rebuilt and I'll ask for details once I've seen the video. This will be my first boat, ever! I'm 60 years old and a capable mechanic but don't want something I'll need to do any significant wrenching on. I live near Clear lake in Lakeport , Ca. The boat will mainly be used for fishing . This is not perhaps the best choice for fishing in my opinion. I've been looking for several months for a bass boat and I've come to realize that older boats can be a better value. Hence the reason I'm a part of this forum and considering this boat.
Please let me know what you think

I'd give it a shot as looks clean and maintained. I've heard of no complaints the motor, and VP outdrives are damn near bulletproof. Make sure that the outdrive upper bellows are in good shape and still flexible. Not that hard to replace though, as you only have to pull the upper gearbox to replace.

I can't tell what model number outdrive on it, but on the rear the upper gearcase. Let us (me) know. I had a 25 footer with 350 GM and 280 VP OD. I have a lot info in the house VP drives. Help ya if needed. Wish the best!

Hey Robby,
Isn't your flatty an Olson?
That would explain why the flatty has such great lines.
Your flatty came from Oregon.

Not the same. The Flatty is Olsen. Other is bigger boat maker and from East coast. Never did find a damn thing searching the Flat. Still a mystery..
