I have been wanting to replace the modern steering wheel that is on our '59 Bell Boy Hardtop 265. The original steering was replaced when the PO replaced the motor with a modern 4 stroke Mercury. I love these Quicksilver steering setup because you can use them with newer motors line mine. I've tried it before and works great.

Thanks to my cousin, I traded a modern steering wheel and steering cable for a complete setup Rideguide steering wheel. Steering cable will come next. However, the one that I traded for has the angled helm where I'm looking for a straight helm. This is the first that I have seen with the angled helm. Most of the ones that I have seen have the straight out helm.

Anyone have a Quicksilver Rideguide helm that is willing to trade for an angled one? Thanks in advance.

Eduardo

Edwardo,
I dug through my old helms and the only one I have for that steering wheel is also angled.

Thank you Thom for your effort. I appreciate it. I had asked my friend Larry of Vintage Boatworks here in California if he had any I could trade and they were the same; he had all angled helms. Thanks again Thom.

My hunt continues.

I'm just a new novice here but are you talking about what looks like the "column" like in a car, that is angled? Would it be possible to have a machine shop mill that piece down to what you want? Being that it seems the part is hard to find, would that be an option? Just trying to help, and to understand for that matter. I am new to all this stuff. :)

Hi Marty, yes it's the column piece. The piece is made of cast aluminum which has been tapped perpendicular to the angle for the threaded rod. It's designed to go with the angle of the helm. I know the straight ones are around. I was hoping to change this out before our next Central California meet in 2 weeks. Thanks Marty for your thoughts, and welcome to this old boat hobby. Warning: it's addictive.

Mark I have not. I know Joe, who I have had a pleasure of talking to a several times in the past. A few years back, I bought a triangular Ride Guide center wheel emblem from him.

Thanks for the idea Mark. Appreciate it.

Shoulda said something a few years back, I would have swapped even up. Had to fabricate a mahogany block to put the helm at an angle.

Hi Jim, thanks for the notice. Have you noticed that vintage steering wheels are going up in price? This would be a $240 total for me, which is on the high side. Don't get me wrong, these are great mechanical wheels.

Another gentlemen and friend of the Golden State Glassics member just sent me an email yesterday. I'm hoping he has one available. Thanks again Jim.

I'm familiar with these wheels and up to recent days, I haven't seen many angled mount wheels until now. Maybe because my Dorsett Catalina had a straight mount helm. My cousin had one too.

I remember that project; very nice work. Wasn't that a Dorsett windshield too on that Herters? Interesting that this project came up. After looking at your dash and wood work, I'm currently doing a similar project with mine. I'll post some pictures. Thanks.

Eduardo, your memory is sure a lot better than mine. Yes I did use a Dorsett windshield, had to trim the bottom to fit the curve of the Herters. Glad to give you some ideas. Just a back--at-cha for you helping when I did the Lone Star Mystic.

Yeah, I know what you're saying. I run into this a lot on old truck and tractor parts. Some parts I want bad ,but not THAT bad..Just thought I'd add it to the mix. I'll keep on the look out.

Hmmm, didn't realize until now that my boat's helm is also angled, made by Nautalloy.

That was almost 11 years ago and our very first vintage fiberglass boat. Thanks for that picture. Good job on yours too.

Thanks Jim. Btw, drove for the first time an Aristocraft boat, David Martin's boat. David wanted me to test it out during the Day on the Delta. Wide beam, and for her size, rode like it was smaller and lighter. Great motor; always like the Meteors.

The smaller boats tend to have the angled wheels, more room for the driver. Very nice glassic you have there. Looks pretty original. Those Nauttalloy wheels, being aluminum, are very desirable, the only one that came in my model and year boat.

Yeah,David's getting the kinks out of that aristo. I think when he gets it worked out, it will run great with that 100hp. Those old boats are pretty agile for their size.

Thanks, the boat is all original except for the motor which was changed in 1966.
