TOPIC: New Guy Here

New Guy Here 8 years 5 months ago #121550

It's been fun looking at all the vintage boats...at 70+ I'm kind of vintage myself.
I'm not into making it pretty, just want it to be reliable and functional. My boat, Big Duck, doesn't quite fit here, but it is early 70's and fiberglass.

Not true, Jeff...all are welcome here. Take a look. We have a section called "The 70's Disco-Fiber." So, welcome to the group and let's see some photos of the "Big Duck." If it turns out that we don't like your boat, we'll kick you off the site. Fair enough?

Yes, please, post some pictures!

I'm working on a 1970 Arrow Glass Flyer right now, so it's all good!

And again, welcome aboard!

For some reason I can't do a "Preview" so I don't know if these pics will actually show up. Big Duck is a 1972, 28' Land-N-Sea (houseboat). She sleeps 7 (bunk beds), generator, air conditioning, full galley, stand up hot water shower, flybridge - she's pushed by a Volvo Penta Aquamatic 250 outdrive via a 260HP small block Chevy.

I bought her sight unseen on eBay about 6 years ago and brought her back home to SC from Las Vegas. It took a year or so to bring her up to my specs (not a restoration by any means) and I have been using her ever since.

Now that's one nice trailerable houseboat! I've been half-looking for one for some time. I inquired about a SeaCamper that was completely trashed inside. The engine looked bad and the outdrive was worse. The owner wouldn't sell! We never even talked about money.

Anyway, great pictures of a great boat. All you need now is a 425 HP big block Chevy. I'm close to you...about 6 miles north of Seneca, SC on lake Keowee. If you ever need help with anything...parts, questionable advice, etc., let me know. I'm here: nautilusrestorations.com

Jan,
Thanks for the kind offer.
We've done Keowee (and Jocassee and Hartwell and Greenwood).
Here's one of our first adventures w/ Big Duck - on Keowee.
http://72land-n-sea.blogspot.com/2011/12/laid-back-cruise.html

Here's a later adventure on Keowee.
http://72land-n-sea.blogspot.com/2013/04/first-2013-big-duck-outing.html

No 400+ horses for us - we seldom go over 12 mph.

And if/when you get serious about a boat like mine, let me know. I've been in contact with 6 owners and every once in a while one turns up for sale. In fact there's a fellow on Lake Mead who has a turnkey, twins, flybridge, generator etc w/ trailer for under 15k.

It's really something special when a boat, or any vehicle for that matter, becomes a part of the family and the family experience. Big Duck found you, and memories are timeless!!! Happy Boating!!!

Jeff:
Less than $15K sounds tempting and thanks for the offer to help locate one for me but currently, we have health issues to deal with and venture capital is at an all time low. The only reason I inquired about the other one was because it looked like a $1,000 or less boat to me.

A pontoon "boat" is simply a motorized raft with a living room on top. You may quote me.

I see someone has been poking around this thread by the hits on my blog. Here's a video that was used by the Land N Sea folks at boat shows. Click on the pic to start the video...it's from about 1970. At about 3 minutes into the video the boat gets plashed and there's shots on the water.

Very cool boat! I like the utilitarian layout and for what is akin to a floating camper it is pretty neat looking. Thanks for posting the link...that was an EPIC trip!

Amazing to me how people could pull things, as large as that big boat, with a car!!! Nowadays, you need a truck. Hmmm, conspiracy by the auto industry making cars smaller and less powerful so that if you need to pull something, you are forced to buy a truck!!!! Lol.
I remember as a kid, we pulled a tandem axle Nomad travel trailer with a 1966 Buick Wildcat convertible!!!! Loved that car, it was red with red interior and a white top!!!! Beautiful.

Love that boat by the way.

Don't know if this pic will load up but back in the '50s there was a movie with Lucy and Desi called the Long Long trailer. Pulled by I think a'52 Mercury. There was a helper wheel on the tongue.
