TOPIC: Guess what this is...

Guess what this is... 8 years 6 months ago #120912

Hi!

I'm a new member here on this forum and I just picked up a "new" 16' fiberglass boat. I'm not sure what it is and I can't find any mfg data on the boat. It has a 1959 35 hp Johnson on it as well as a sticker with the phrase "Spirit of 76". The boat has been repainted and had originally a blue color on top. I believe the boat is older than 1976. It had a license sticker on it as well, claiming that it was a 1976 Crestliner. I have no paperwork with the boat.

Maybe someone recognizes the type and mfg? It would be appreciated a lot. I'm trying to get it back into former glory and could use some more info on it.

It looks like I get five guesses. I don't think it's a 1976 16' Crestliner, which looks nothing like your boat. (see 1st photo) Rounded windshields like yours almost always indicate the 1960's. A photo of the dashboard would help. My first guess is a late 1960s Sears. (2nd photo)

Here's what the Sears dash looks like...anything like yours?

Here are some other pictures. It looks like it slightly different in the dashboard and the deck in front of the window.

OK, it's not a Sears. Just the shape of the floor decides that. I'll cogitate on it further.

Thanks for your help. I had to rip the floor out. It was pretty rotten... But it shows the structure well!

verschuren,

WELCOME ABOARD.

I wouldn't be shocked to find out that it was built for Sears & Roebuck or Montgomery Ward by Arkansas Traveler, as that firm built lots of similar boats.

yours, satx

Looks like a Sears built by Glasspar.

Welcome aboard, glad to have you here, nice find. I'm not sure what it is but I'm leaning toward Arkansas traveler also. Definitely Attwood hardware on there. Same steering wheel I have as well as the step pads, on my '60 Wagemaker Clipper.

Hey, my truck is on that site in the Gallery. "Marty enjoys Grandpa's 1968 D100 Custom" is the heading in case anyone wants to check it out.

Welcome to the wonderful world of Classics!!! Nice looking boat.

I live in Minnesota. All we have to do here is take the state registration numbers into the DMV and they look up the numbers and tell you the year model and make of the boat. They will also tell you if it has a title or just a registration tag. Maybe your state has this available also.

This is a good tip, but very often the information that is in the state files not correct. I have boat after boat after boat that has not been registered or titled correctly. So do not rely on this avenue to be accurate.

Now you have me worried that the state do not identify my boat correctly. Here are some pics they said it was a 1962 Silver Line 350. Does that sound right?

Thanks for the help. It seems to be a big puzzle. The only thing I'm sure of is the Johnson outboard and the dodge sticker. I don't know if the Spartan trailer could be of any help in determining the year?

I guess you could try going through the library here one manufacturer at a time to find what make of boat you have. It would take some time but there is a lot of useful information in the library.

On a side note, I have a registration paper for my boat that is from 1981/1982 and the state had the boat listed as built in 1963 when in fact it is a 1962 model.
