Repairing a boat hull and what I thought was just some trailer loading scrapes patched over with Bondo turned out to be JB Weld absolutely slathered all over the bottom. 120 grit sander wouldn't touch it, 60 grit paper wouldn't touch it, tried my belt sander and just scratched it a little, wound up using a knotted wire wheel on the 4" grinder to cut through it. After taking a few of the areas down I couldn't find any trailer scrapes, just some small holes. The PO SCREWED a 3/4" plywood board to the floor and went right through the hull!! Both sides!!! He tried repairing the small holes with the Weld. What a nincompoop. Gheeeesh, Now I have that off my chest, thanks for your time :)

Right up there with using household lamp cord to power your accessories Cal, I feel your pain brother!

I HAVE used JB weld to repair the holes in the outboard AV(or cavitation) plate from one of those "whale tails", worked pretty good for that. :)

I have used JB Weld to glue things together, cowls etc and like you Mark I've filled those cavitation plate holes, works good for that but I've never seen it slatherd on like this. Maybe I can find a picture of it. That stuff is as hard as nails.
PS, anyone need some used whale tails??? with som wear marks of course

Cal,I know from experience, it's no fun fixing someone else's goof ups. Mark, Been thinking about getting some of those holes welded up someone drilled in the cavi plate on my I/O for a stingray fin I removed. Sounds like the JB might be the ticket. Thanks

Oh well what works. Some might remember but I fish in very shallow areas and have some very rough ramps I launch from. The keel at the front of my boat was worn badly before I got it. I repaired it a few times as it should be done. Now I had used this boat many years. It was a 58 MFG. It started leaking again and it was in the middle of summer so I said the hell with it. Anyway I got an idea. I took a tube of Shoo Goo and shot that hole full and used plastic wrap and duct tape to hold it in. Anyway it worked great until I was going to redo the paint in the winter anyway. I flipped the hull and the repair was real smooth even after half a summer of abuse. So I painted it and left it in. Several years later I pulled the repair out and it was still doing it's job and had very little wear. That time around I made a 3/8 metal runner for the bow keel area. It worked well too. And it was almost invisible. So sometimes that little temporary repair may outlast doing it "The Right Way" I took heat over it at the time but it workked great. By the way I use Shoo Goo for many things. great stuff. :ohmy:This boat was a user boat set up for fishing. It was far from what it started as in 1958.

Good Robert. I was just venting on a bad day trying to sand the stuff down. If the PO was going to use it fill his little screw up holes there was no need to slather it 5" up and down entire area. I guess overkill is better than sinking :)

Like said here..."The keel at the front of my boat was worn badly before I got it".

Same me! I got from a friend for free a 10 Olympian dingy that was dragged on rock beaches too much. Holes and worn down keel. Filled with JB and its better than original now. Works fine if "done right". Want to sand it down? My 4" Makita with a hard grinding disc will smooth it down easy.

Didn't think of the grinding disk, should be better than the knotted wire. Thanks.
