TOPIC: Transom

Transom 8 years 10 months ago #117943

Hi. New poster to the board. I picked up a late 57 or early 58 Surflite a coupe years ago and am now beginning the research for the restoration. The hull is in very good condition but there has been some 'extras' added to the transom. I wish to remove the added material and get as close as possible to an original transom shape and construction. Any pictures you'd be willing to share of late 50's Glastron transoms would be appreciated. P.S. I have searched the forum for 'transom' and 'Glastron' with few hits that helped me.
Thanks!

IMO, the only added on part is the large metal bracket. Probably a bandaid 'fix' for a soft transom or to overpower the boat w a larger hp OB.

Remove it, replace transom and redo the interior.

I'd guess its got hollow fiberglass stringers and no flotation foam to get waterlogged below deck. So if the deck is all solid, you've gotten lucky.

Nice Glastron. What kind of cleats does it have?

That is precisely my plan. I want to be sure I build back to the 'correct' shape etc. after I do any necessary repair work underneath which is why I wanted some pics if anyone has any. I have a pile of removed cleats, speedo, lights and other trim bits. Which pieces do you mean exactly? I'll grab a pic.

Thanks.

Just wondered if yours had the same Glastron cleats as my 60 Fireflite:

Mine was (still is) in much worse shape

I do not have that style but am wishing I did! Very nice.

Chrome trim bits received with the boat. I also have some aluminum caps etc. to complete the trim on the sides...

That boat has beautiful lines. Fiberglass stingers? Man I wish I was that lucky. Your trim and speedo looks good and shiny too. Nice find.
As for the plate. I've seen alot worse quick fixes, personally I'd rebuild the transom, see if that plate could be shined up and reuse. Not original but its structural and adds unique character to the boat.

Thanks. We were happy to get our hands on it. I did track down the original owner which is a bonus and got the background story on the boat. It seems to sit on it's original Little Dude trailer which came with it's 1957 title. That will be a different resto story I suspect.
