TOPIC: not sure where to start

not sure where to start 8 years 10 months ago #117679

Free boats are not free! We all know that.

Here's my story.

I bought an 83 bayliner bass boat this spring - 16ft - came with a box of parts the guy said was - or could be - a Chrysler 85 hp engine.

I immediately sold the engine & started using a 15hp tiller outboard I had.

I've been trolling Craigslist now since March & finally found it! 1969 Johnson 85hp engine - runs great with controls - $50 please get it out of my garage.

I sent a text.

he sent back several pictures of a complete (not disassembled) Johnson V4 with controls & cover. Yes $50 please get it out of my garage.

Over the next hour he sent me a bunch of pics of this 1956 boat with a 1956 engine too. Free if I want it - with title.

Hard to pass it up! I attach my 5x8 utility trailer & head out (2 hour drive).

I get there & they guys wife is so excited I'm taking the boat & engines she refuses to take more than $30 for all of it. & then she hands me the title.

Turns out - her father had recently passed away & this was his boat & his engine. He spent much of his retirement rebuilding outboards. They assured me that both engines ran nicely though the Johnson had not been started in 2 years & the other one (the 1956 - don't know what it is)ran this summer.

so I load a 14ft boat into my 8ft trailer & smile my entire drive home - getting home late I didn't have time to unload or play - I will do that tonight.

Worst case is I have a few spare parts!

& for the record - yes I scour Craigslist 5 times a day & occasionally this kind of deal does come up - but they are usually gone in minutes not hours. Gotta put in the time!

It appears that you got yourself a Cutter Jet Deville, or a variant of one. The VIN should be stamped into one of the cast handles on the transom. Steering looks one-to-one ratio. Will be fun wrestling that wheel at speed.

The title says it's a "Flagship" & is 14ft long.

Nothing else. I will take better pictures this evening when I get home from work. Though it is snowing - & its now sitting in a utility trailer till I figure out what the heck to do with it.

brassmonkey,

WELL, you COULD bring that boat to me & I'll dispose of it for you.
(LOL.)

Doggone PURTY hull. - NEVER seen one of those & glass finned boats are almost never found in south TX = They were literally worn out & JUNKED decades ago, due to our LONG, LONG boating season.
(There are a few tin finned hulls around here however. = MINE is a 1958-59 TEXAS MAID OSPREY, on a KING FISH, San Antonio-built, trailer & I was delighted to find it sitting "unloved" out in a pasture.- When repainted/reupholstered, I'll power it with a 1958 Johnson SUPER QUIET 35HP.)

yours, satx

If the title says Flagship, then it probably is an Owens:

Owens bought Cutter, then both Owens and Cutter boats were basically the same design. 1956 is likely not correct, more like 1958 or 1959. The motor looks to be a 1956 Evinrude 30 hp with 6 volt electric start.

Very cool history!

The title says 1956 Flagship - she is 14ft long. The Cutter history there said there were lots of people making boats all using the same basic pirate mold though.

This one seems a little too old & a little too small for what I read there - Flagship was the engine manufacturer for inboards.

In any case - thank you for looking - I have placed this engine & boat up for sale $350 with title & without trailer as-is where is.

I would prefer to trade for cool stuff - honestly - I just went there looking for an engine for my fishing boat & came home with this gem so there was no intention to keep it or restore it.

If anyone in central Illinois wants it send me a message - I love to trade, barter & deal so make me an offer (you guys all know what I have in it so not really fair)

Brassmonkey,
Great of you to save this boat to be loved by someone again!

Why not post it in the Glassifieds?

Will do - wasn't really trying to sell it here - more just mentioning it wont be a project I keep.
