TOPIC: 1967 Johnson 100hp

1967 Johnson 100hp 8 years 11 months ago #116126

My mechanic has told me that he can not get the lower unit to come off the motor. He says the drive shaft splines are seized in the crankcase. Is there a way to unseize them to allow the lower unit to be removed? I wanted to have the water pump impeller replaced.
thank you.

Couple things here. I also have a '67 100hp golden meteor. Never heard of the splines freezing up in the crankcase but I suppose everything is possible with these workhorses. This may be a dumb question but how old is the mechanic? Not the motor, we know that, the mechanic? Some of the younger generation just don't want to tackle these guys. The obvious bolts you can see from the outside are not the only ones holding the LU in place. I believe there is a hidden bolt inside the LU. I'll check mine and send a pic.

Remove the water pickup tail (4 Screws)

There is a hex head bolt, hard to get at but I believe it has to be removed.

nm02210,

WELCOME ABOARD. = Glad you found your 100HP OMC but sorry for the LU trouble.
(Have you looked at the appropriate SELOC manual for 'tear-down' instructions???)

yours, satx

thanks. The mechanic is in his early forties. He said his training did not go back to a 1967 motor but he has been working on outboards for many years. I will check with him to see if he knew about the hidden hex bolt.

thanks. Is there a website to get free downloads of the manual or do you have to purchase one?

There is a site that has free online manuals for some engines but sorry to say our '67s are unusual ducks.
