I bought my first boat on July 24th and absolutely love it! The registration has it listed as a 1970 Swiss Craft. The boat logo "Swiss Craft" matches the registration, but the few pictures I've been able to find lead me to believe this is probably a late 1960's model...Could anyone shed some light? Or provide any additional information on my boat? The Swiss Craft brand? Or where I might be able to obtain parts such as the windshield, lights, etc.? I'd very much appreciate it.

Good looking rig, and welcome aboard. I'm sure some of the gang will be able to help with the info requested. The windshield was likely made by Taylor Made, but they no longer produce windshields. Dave Albertson (CC1000) I believe still has some for sale, just depends on what width you need.

Lights and other hardware was almost always sourced from one of several manufacturers that serviced the industry back in those days, they are listed in the FG Library under HW and Accessories.

(Most of the time the dealer installed after the boat was delivered to them.)

You can Make your own Windshield a lot cheaper than you can buy one.

LOL, no I'm just kneeling inside - My wife made me do it for the picture. I do have a Minkota trolling motor, but I'm looking to get a small outboard for it at some point.

Dave Nau - 1966 MFG Niagara with 1963 Mercury 350 (35hp) outboard and 1966 Tee Nee trailer. Second boat is a 1962 MFG Edinboro with a 1984 Evinrude 70hp and Holsclaw trailer.

Re:Info on my new glassic 9 years 2 months ago #113581

allucey,

After looking at the photos as well as I can (I blew them up.), I wonder if it ever HAD a windshield.

Numerous boats of that era were produced without windshields as UTILITY RUNABOUTS for fishing and other uses.
Also, about that time it was "the fashion" to take the windshields off, as it was thought to be "Cool".

IF it was my boat, I'd try to figure out what year that the boat was made & then I would find a "proper year" outboard for it, that is about the maximum recommended size for the boat. = I would pick a Evinrude, Gale, Johnson or Sea King to rehabilitate/restore to power the hull. - Probably 40HP.

just my OPINION, satx

I'm interested in learning how to shape the lexan or plexiglass. Do you have a link for that? Thanks, Paul

Thanks Satx!

That's funny they took the windshields off to be "cool", but I guess every generation has their thing.

Is there a way that I can tell if there ever was a windshield on the boat, by looking at the boat itself? The only thing I know about the history of my specific boat is that the gentleman I purchased it from had bought it from a Mennonite family in Seneca County, NY.

I would like to purchase an age/hp appropriate motor for her. Thank you for the branding suggestions. I've seen a couple Evinrude and Johnson available, but have either been out of my price range, or out of repair...so I'll just have to be patient.

Re:Info on my new glassic 9 years 2 months ago #113616

Are there any holes in the top or on the sides where the windshield would be? Also, I have a 1962 Evinrude Lark 40hp That I totally restored and rebuilt for my 1961 Londestar. I wanted a bit more power so I removed it and it's just sitting waiting for a new owner. I live in Tulsa Ok. so if you're interested I'd make you a REALLY GREAT DEAL on her. ALL NEW Electronics, Carb Kits, Hoses, Lower seals etc... She IS the Electric shift model but..It all works perfectly. I have the controls etc and it would all fit perfectly on your boat.

Re:Info on my new glassic 9 years 2 months ago #113618

allucey,

Look on the underside of the deck & see if there are any holes for fasteners OR evidence that holes were filled. - NO sign of holes = a UTILITY RUNABOUT.
(IF it is an Utility, I wouldn't put a windshield on a boat that originally didn't have one.)

As to finding a an outboard for the boat, I would look every day for a suitable BigTwin on craigslist.com, the "bargain ad" papers like Penny Saver & post "WANTED" ads at grocery store bulletin boards & other similar places. = I, long ago, lost count of the OB that I've bought for 100 bucks or less by doing a little "looking about".
(I don't think that anyone ever throws an OB away.)

HINT: Check out from a library or buy yourself a copy of CHEAP OUTBOARDS: THE BEGINNER'S GUIDE TO MAKING AN OLD MOTOR RUN FOREVER & follow Max's EXCELLENT advice. = The 1950s-1970 BigTwin's are VERY simple to work on & so over-engineered that they will run for eons after being "updated" with about 100 bucks worth of replaceable parts from SIERRA INC.
(SIERRA parts are available from your local NAPA store.)

yours, satx

Wow! That was easy. I'd read the part about the alum. but hadn't seen the plexi part. You just ease it into the frame and it bends itself. Very surprising.

Thanks a million. Well, thanks about $400, I'm guessing!

I see you're in Long Beach, CA. Shipping my motor from OK to Long Beach Might be a bit Pricey. I can check and see if you'd like. I can and will crate it for you to ensure it would make it out there in good shape. I spent $400 on the rebuild in 2010 and only ran her a total of 4 hours befor upgrading.

$250 would be the asking price + Shipping.

You can see the motor and details about her rebuild here... forums.iboats.com/forum/boat-repair-and-restoration/boat-restoration-building-and-hull-repair/394579-1961-lonestar-flamingo-splashed-w-pics/page11#post5043100
