Hello,

Need help with a wire. I'll figure it out eventually, but maybe someone can save me some time. There is no battery yet. Just got this at auction. There are the two main battery cables and two smaller ones. I just replaced both terminals. I know one is for the lights but can't figure out the yellow wire. Sorry, I'm not the best mechanic/electrician.

Follow the yellow wire and see where it goes.

That would be impossible to tell unless you were the one that wired it, boats usually have no standard color coding and were frequently rewired anyway.

Taking a wild guess, I would suspect it is the hot for some accessory like lights, the little blacks ones are accessory ground, plus the hot and ground main cables, but who knows.

To narrow down the guess work. Negative battery post are usually smaller than positive. ( the threaded post that the butterfly nuts go on). BUT NO NOT ALWAYS. Check to see how the wire ends fit the battery. This may answer your question.

At least your wire is automotive or marine wire...the idiot who owned our boat before us replaced parts of the original harness with Romex house wiring.

My guess is that the yellow is hot, but that's based on common sense. NEVER ASSume that the PO had common sense.

And once in a while, you get a doozy. My West Bend Golden Shark outboard is POSITIVE GROUND. Although that is very much the exception rather than the rule. But luckily it still has the factory harness and the cables look like negative ground so people wouldn't hook them up wrong. But, since I knew it was positive ground, I had to double check everything just to make sure it was correct.
