TOPIC: Hull Id

Need suggestions on where to look for the Hull Id of a boat that was built in 1967.

I read that Manufactures weren't required to put them on a boat that was built before November 1, 1972. So I'm not even sure there is one.

What are we supposed to do then if there isn't one?

Please advise....

Is there a serial number plate or any other ID? My 59 Tomahawk had an OBA plate. Ohio DNR used that number to confirm that there were no previous titles and issue a new Hull ID #

He's probably trying to title/register the boat. Texas gave me some static, when I tried to title/register mine. I had to bring them the boat and show them that there was no HIN, just a SN tag. I got my title and registration, once they did the visual inspection.

Yeah, Ohio required an inspection too. Without an existing title registration gets tricky. Just trying to keep boat theft down.

As stated, MFG's were NOT required to place a HIN plate on the boat until after 1972. If you have a title indicating a mfg date prior to 1972 then No state should hold you liable for having one. I Understand the theft problem , and Oklahoma is one of the worst states for trying to title old boats with No Titles, but Not having a HIN plate on a Pre-72' boat is NOT one of the issues.

In my over 50 years of "messing about in boats", I've seen FAR more pre-1972 "non-numbered boats" than those with a hull number.

Ask your DMV. In NY if you get a police report stating no registration, you can register.

All good advice. Some states have a form you can fill out certifying that the boat was either home built or built prior to 1972. You might check with your local DMV or whoever registers boats in CA these days. Back in 1980 when I registered my sailboat in CA they actually had a CHP examine the boat. I don't know if they still do that. Oddly enough they didn't give a sh... about the trailer it was sitting on.
