If short shaft is 15" and long shaft is 20" which one goes on an 18" transom? Long shaft with a spacer?

15" - Which is measured in a truly vertical sense and the transom you measured is at an angle, correct?

Hmmm, How are you measuring your transom? What boat is this? Regardless, if it is truly 18" you'll need a Long Shaft motor and you may or may not need the aide of a spacer to get the motor where it needs to be.

I questioned my own answer right after I posted it, I don't think the direct measurement is going to be 15" on an 18" angled transom. A 20" motor would be awfully long IMHO though, at least 2" longer than it needed to be which would create a great amount of drag in the water.

What boat are you talking about here Curse?

Hi,
It would appear that they intended for a short shaft to run elevated (jacked up).

Joe

Just curious what the purpose of a jacked up short shaft would be. Would it be fo more performance?

um...looks more to me like a 2in jack on a long shaft might work better.

I'd advise running a long shaft motor on that boat and putting a shim under the bracket.

Previous owner says it had a short shaft. That picture shows 18 and 19 inch transoms could be either? I guess I will find out when the time comes. Thanks for that pic!
