While taking apart the LU on my RDS-20 Johnson in my driveway I dropped a small screw, one that holds the intake screen in place. Driveway is blacktop. I saw the screw drop and bounce to my left, last time I ever saw it! Other times I've dropped hardware by my feet never to see them again until sweeping the floor ten feet away. I believe steel on concrete bounces farther away than a rubber ball will. There is a law in effect here. The more important the part the harder and farther it will go when dropped.

I always set up a large electromagnetic field around my work space, just in case.

LOL, I usually use a tarp under my work. Not as effective as an EMF, but still works for the most part...

They don't bounce at all when dropped in the test tank.

Or in gravel! I found an awful lot of missing hardware when I raked all the gravel off my old driveway in preps for concrete.

And AHHH, cold test tanks in fall & winter, many times have had to reach with one arm into the chilly, oily water to retrieve a stainless part. Loads 'O Fun!!! :woohoo:

Cheers..........ed

Stainless steel screws naturally bounce toward a bilge. I have removed inboard engines and found thousands of lost stainless screws all huddled together. I once dropped a screw out of my pocket at the supermarket. I found it two years later in the bilge of my boat that was six miles away.

ed-mc,

Your comment above reminds me of one of our old sayings from boarding school days/DAZE: "The likelihood of a slice of bread falling jelly side down, depends on the cost of the carpet."

All this time I thought there was something wrong with me, new glasses, mind going, etc. Now it's good to know I'm not alone.
PS, I did eventually find the ss screw. I accidentally stepped on it while hosing down the drive. Go figure. Bilges are always a great catch-all especially when they are oily.

I think the loss of a screw is directly related to importance of that specific screw and is it replaceable by the time you absolutely need to have the project finished!!
That has been my observation over the years.

Given all those examples, I think it'd be safe to postulate that the chance of finding a dropped screw is Inversely Proportional to its importance to project completion!

That sound about right??

The Law Of Physics states that a dropped screw will bounce straight up into the sky and get caught is a temporal time zone. It will either never show up or if it does it will be sticking out of a tire.

Robert, oh so true.

From now on the entire group should make it a steadfast rule. If you're missing a screw (in your driveway) go for a ride in your vehicle, the screw will be hidden somewhere in the tread of the new tires.

So you're saying we should start looking for all our missing hardware in the little town of Wayward Pines!

No matter how careful, or how strong you hold the screw, it WILL go missing. 6-32 screws seem to be especially prone to this.
When happening too often, you need to offer up a quart of 2 stroke oil in sacrifice to the boat gods.
