When you fellas restore an older outboard what do you use as a sheath for the cable/wires going to the motor from the transom. The black rubber covering that is always the first to rot off and crack up, the one everyone seems to wrap up with black electrical tape. Have never seen an older OMC that had a decent rubber covering holding the battery cables and ign wires that go into the motor.

I've used that plastic split loom stuff but I really don't like it. Just one step above a dozen loose wires.

Electrical jobbers carry all sorts and sizes of heat shrink tubing. There are ones the correct diameter for the harness, but you will have to disconnect all of the wires from the relay box to slip the covering on from that end. Some jobbers sell the stuff by the foot, others have pre-cut lengths of the stuff. Look for a wall thickness of .010" to .020" You can put a layer on, shrink it with a heat gun, then put on another layer if necessary. They come out looking very nice if done carefully.

McMaster-Carr sells all different sizes of heat shrink Cal, if you don't have anybody close who handles it;

Yep Heat Shrink is what I used and it came out fine. Can't remember where I got it from though. I think it was McMaster-Carr like Mark said.

I use this stuff. Its super easy to work with and its fray resistant. [img/] image.mustangmonthly.com/f/techarticles/1312_new_bits_ford_mustang_products_december_2013/58125455/Wire+Wrap.jpg

Put a little shrink wrap on each end to keep it in place and it looks nice and professional.
