Hey Mark. It's my next "project" boat. A teeny tiny 13.5" Crestliner mustang. Papers say it's a 1970 but looking in our library here I'm thinking it's more late 60's. It' complete sans motor, all hardware is shiny etc. I'm going to pop the top today and start digging. Should make a few waves for someone if I stick a matching '70 'rude 65hp on the stern.
Trailer and all sit sideways in my work area out of the way and behind my "Pull Toy".
Something to keep me out of trouble during the cold weather.

Woodglass

Wish it was that easy. The whole transom was wet and soaked through and delaminating but hard as nails. A real PITA to chip out and clean up.

You know you have a bad transom when the out board is on the ground with transom parts still attached. Someone had a pic of one here a few years ago.

I thought I could at least get 1 more run in this season before thining about adding a steel plating my transom. It passed the knock test and 'only' had little flex:

NOT MY BOAT :)

Wow. Makes you think about selling an older boat. I could never live with myself knowing it's got a rotten arse and not telling a buyer.

an ole bald wise man told me to always drill a small hole in the inside transom and see if the wood comes out wet or dark,,usually it does.you can pound all you want but this is a true test,,then fill with silicone or resin,I have seen them fall off transom going down the road Bill

Maybe I'm just skeptical, but I almost always assume the wood is bad and gonna need replaced. I know there are probably exceptions out there, but I think the odds lean in that favor? We should do a poll on how many were bought that didn't need structural wood replacement by the end of the second season.

I'm just sayin'........ :P

MarkS,

It's been a long time since I inspected a glass hull over 25YO that didn't need the deck removed & the transom & other wood parts replaced.

yours, satx

Cal,
That boat with the Johnson falling off reminds me of your nephew's boat that I bought the Merc 1150 from!!!

Bill, I never did see that boat or how bad it was, only that he was lucky to get back to the dock.
The picture looks like the person was backing down a sand ramp with the motor already down. Good thing it was sand otherwise they would be looking for more than a new transom.

Cal,
I cut a chunk out of his transom and brought it home. All of the plywood inside looked like 100 year old newspaper and just disintigrated when you touched it. They were very lucky to get back in one piece. I showed it to quite a few people and they could not believe that they didn't lose the motor.

There was one for sale here a few years ago. The add said needed some fiberglass work on back. You could clearly see the cracks and the transom pulled out in the pics on the screen. He wanted almost a thousand. The outboard was in the boat sitting with leaves all around it and it had not been used in several years. I offered to take the boat off his hands and he thought I insulted him. After several months he stripped it and put it up for free without a trailer. I didn't want it then.
