cool looking boat - reminds me of a Custom Craft - perhaps its a copy of one. I've never seen one like this.

gene gene,

WELCOME ABOARD. HAPPY NEW YEAR.

I have NO clue as to who actually built your hull, though Brue's correct that it LOOKS like a "Custom Craft.
("Cloning boats" was really common in those days.)

Hi guys,

Thanks for the Re's and the welcome. I really didn't expect to get an I.D. on my boat it appears to be a orphan (one off) maybe? This post was started mainly to try to post pics. I had a friend over to help with resize and all (thanks BOB). Will need more help there.

The boat needs a lot of help I just splashed her a few times this year to check her out.

She does look much like a Custom Craft, but is a true 3 point hydro with step sponsons (spelling?) with a drain plug in each and a very shallow V at the aft.

It's a real Rat looking boat at this time, looks like some kids got after it with rattle cans (lots of over spray) chrome tape, and flame stickers, house paint peeling all over inside and a piece of plywood screwed down in the back (I'm thinking soft floor). More later.

Thanks, Gene

Re: Hydrocon? 9 years 9 months ago #103961

gene gene,

The SAD truth is that you may NEVER find out who made your hull. = Just here in TX, there were more than 100 boatbuilding companies between 1950-70.

Some built as little as ONE boat before closing their doors forever.
(Some small/independent "builders" MAY have built NO boats. = A man from my hometown still has his father's mid-1950s era hull/deck molds & Waylon told me about a decade ago that, "I don't think that Dad ever finished a boat, as he ran out of money trying to start another business.")

BEST WISHES on your search for info, satx

@ satx, I think I'm OK with possibly never finding the maker. I like seeing the meet ups (G3, cats, custom craft clubs, ect) but I have made many friends already at the AOMCI meets and the midwest classic meet at Beloit this year. The boat turns a few heads now looking as ratty as it is.

@ Mark, I'm looking to give her a complete renovation, restoration is out because I don't know what she looked like new. It Free's me up some to customize to my liking.

@ Bill, Thank you my friend for the good luck and you need not worry I promise not to splash her until she is ready. She really feels good with the tunnel full of air at WOT.

I thought I had a shop near me rented for the winter to work on the boat but the deal fell through, so it's just motor work till spring. What are your feelings about a few custom touches? I would like to get rid of the windshield and replace with low dual windscreens, something like you have on your 1958 Switzercraft Shooting Star.

Thanks to all here, Gene

Gene, it's not a CC. Although the only other stepped catamaran I know of is my 64 CC Aqua Ray. It looks like a bastard step child of a Power Cat and a Johnson (can be found in Glassic Library under OMC). I would start with those two for ideas on how to redo the boat. Good luck with it. Should be very cool when done.

THANKS! OLEGATOR120,

Any idea who the builder was or how to find out?
At least I have a town to research now.

Much appreciated, Gene

after thinking about this, I remember them being built in another location in Orlando also. I knew several of the employees and also the owners but the only name that comes to mind is jim earnest. I worked very close to the Orlando plant when I worked for critchfield. my uncle owned one with a merc800 dr.

Hi OLEGATOR120,

Thanks for the added info. If you happen to remember anything else please post here. Any chance of your family having a picture of your uncles boat?

I called several boat builders and restorers in the Winter Garden, Ocoee, Fl. area but just young working guys. They all said it's before their time. LOL I just need to find that one good old boy who really knows old boats.

Thanks again, Gene

Hello Gene,

I asked a friend who grew up in Florida and has boated his whole life down there and he has never seen or heard of a Hydrocon.

So how is the restoration going?

Thanks,
Terry

Hi Terry,

Thanks for thinking of me. The restoration is out side and winter does not want to quit, 2" of snow yesterday morn mostly gone now. I did receive a fuel pump repair kit in the mail today so with a little sunshine on my old back I can rebuild the pump and clean the carbs on the starflight. I hope to get into the floor & transom later this week.

I see you are planning to attend the Thompson Boat Rally, I will be there as well It's only 3 hrs away for me.

We have our AOMC Tune-up meet on June 13 in Tomahawk, Wi. any chance you can make it?

Thanks, Gene

Hello Gene,

Would like to be in Tomahawk too but it’s unlikely. The FGC is meeting June 19th on the Suwannee River at Old Town in FL to celebrate the clubs 10th anniversary.

Also I’m still working on putting something together for August on the Rock River in WI.

Terry

Hi Terry,

Keep in mind the Tomahawk Nationals Aug 5,6,7,8th. Will the Rock River be the midwest classics?

Thanks for the Star Zenith Boat Club pic, alot of good people there.

The young couple with the white Glasspar that tied up next to yours, I have forgo-tin their names, nice people. Is he a member here?

After seeing those two Sedans on the water that day, I don't know how I could say no to a good deal on one. LOL

Regards, Gene

Re:Hydrocon? 9 years 5 months ago #108332

Hello Gene,

I will definitely keep Tomahawk in mind although I don’t have dates or location for the Midwest Classics meet yet.

The pretty white Glasspar Sedan you saw there last year was Byrons boat and he goes by 1968jetflite. His white on white Sedan is the only one known in that color combination and was probably special order.

I met a guy recently who has a 1965 in the original green on green and is the only known original sedan with a hull that is not white.

And yeah they are great boats. They made a bunch of them and many have survived.

Thanks,
Terry

Hi Gene, Yes I am the one with the white Sedan. I hope the nice stretch of weather allows you to get some work done on the hydrocon.

Terry I really hope you can put together another meet this year, we had a great time and will attend it again if it happens.

Hi Byron, good to here from you.

I was very impressed with yours and Terry's Sedans. They really look good on the water. At speed cutting through waves or at idle they just appear so stable. I'll trade you for a ride in one of my boats when we meet again.

Hope to see you soon, Gene

Hey Guys,

We have Saturday August 15th for the 2015 Midwest All Classics Boat Show at the Star Zenith Boat Club in Beloit. Same agenda as last year with the option for boating Friday on the Rock River and the meet and greet Friday evening. And also a chance again to visit KeVfin’s Boat Cave on Sunday morning.

Putting together a flyer now and will make a formal announcement soon. The meet will be hosted again by the Midwest Chapter of Florida Glasspar Club and boatsinthebelfry.com

Hope to see you all there.

Thanks,
Terry

Hi all,

The renovation has begun so I will be posting in the member projects thread. I have partially removed the floor and found all the wood stringers to be rotten. I hope to have the motor off and transom inspection done by the end of the week and will post pics in the new thread.

It looks like I will be needing alot of help from you guys on this project.

Thanks, Gene

More often than not that's the case with these old girls Gene, glad to hear you're going thru the process to bring her back to life. That boat definitely deserves another life, you just can't find 'em like that anymore. We'll be watching for your project thread, don't be afraid to holler for help if you need it!
