Hello, I am new to this site as well as new to getting into a classic fiberglass boat. We have a place on the Lake of the Ozarks and I have always wanted a vintage boat to put around in from time to time. I absolutely love the Herter's flying fish, the Redfish shark, you get the idea - fins. Unfortunately as I have started my research over the last couple months, everyone else loves them and they are hard to come by. I am not looking to do an extensive restoration so when I came across the following boat it really has my interest peaked. I was looking to get some input from a few experienced people here...

I am looking at a 1959 Magnolia with a 1959 Scott Attwater 40 HP and a 1959 Holsclaw trailer. The owner said everything works, no soft spots, been in water this Summer multiple times, runs great, windshield great, etc.. It is a several hour drive for me to check it out. Is there any advice or anything I should look for when I go? I know from my research that people say old boats are worth what you are willing to pay... With that said, any ball park on what I should spend on this?

I really appreciate any input and look forward to any replies. Thanks

Welcome aboard, you came to the right place for some expert advice.
Looks like a new boat. Nice find but watch the price. Here's a link to a craiglist in east central Wisconsin with the same package. In my opinion it's way too much to pay for a '59 even if it was restored. I would go maybe 7 to 750 tops if it's water ready.

Thanks guys for the advice. I am really torn, I want something that is more of a head turner so leaning toward waiting until I find the right one, larger fins, always liked a color contrast like white/red, etc.. I have a larger budget than this one so I need to relax and wait. Let me know if you come across anything or decide to sell one of yours...

The original ads show a two tone color. If you have extra budget, you could paint the deck a different color and make the upholstery a little flashier.

Good to know. I'm so used to fix and repair that I never bought a boat I could put right in the water and go

Hang around and continue the search. There are some fin boats floating around that are for sale, just have to find them. Two years ago I sold my Herters for $3500 cash with a '58 Merc mark 55. Boat was completely rebuilt with some additives and the motor was gone through by a Merkhead mechanic who grew up with the 55's.

Here's a pic of the boat when finished that the buyer took a week later.
