Aluminum repair 9 years 11 months ago #101330

Hello y'all I'm from South Carolina I have a project that I'm working on that belong to my grandfather it's an aluminum boat and I'm wondering if fiberglass will stick to aluminum and if so what you have to do to prepare it before you apply the fiberglass

Harley,

WELCOME ABOARD.

You might give a little more info on that needs repairing on your GF's boat. Maybe even a photo?

I seriously doubt that fiberglass will stick (at least for very long) to aluminum.

yours, satx

Not recommended. Use this stuff. Pricey, but will work

Gluvit is good stuff. Back in the 80s we used a similar product on a 12 foot aluminum with lots of rivet damage on the bottom. I forget the brand name but it was used by a lot of the airboat guys in Fla. Bought it at Joe's Auto Marine Supply in Ft. Lauderdale. They're still in business (and still not on the web). Sealed up the bottom completely and it never came loose or cracked as long as we had that boat. We just masked off everything above the waterline, flipped the boat over, and flowed that stuff over the entire lower hull.

Harley,

Instead of me trying to tell you "second hand", email my friend TallTexan & ask him how to stop an aluminum boat from leaking. = He KNOWS how & MUCH cheaper than using Gluvit, too.

BEST WISHES, satx

Better yet, tell me why you want to put fiberglass on an aluminum boat. I suspect it's because it leaks, but there are other possible reasons someone might think they want to. None of them are very good reasons to either.......

And of course pix would be great.

My first boat was an aluminum 1960 Century 12 footer that leaked. I sanded the bottom to give it place to bite and put three coats of oil based paint on it. Never leaked again. I had hundreds of leaking rivets.
