Weather has become pretty chilly, down to freezing some nights already so I'm putting my "Pull Toy" to sleep for the season. Polished her all up, took the battery out and have a vent fan running in the bilge to keep fresh air circulating. It's stored inside a heated garage. I Sta-billed the remaining fuel, pulled the plugs and prayed in fogging oil, and sprayed inside the carb. Misted the entire engine with silicone and planning on changing the elec. shift lower oil. Last spring I put in OMC type "c" today I was looking at some local stores that sell off brand lower unit oils that are stated as "compatible with type c". Didn't buy any cuz I'm a little cautious about the "compatible" claim. Thinking about staying with the original OMC, since the selectric lowers are finicky. Costs more but maybe the clear conscience of knowing what's in there is worth the cost. Opinions??

Stick with the OMC type C, compatible with and same as are not the same. The solenoids in the lower unit may be deteriorated by a brand x oil. Just my 2 cents, Im a merc guy but I used to have a fat forty evinrude with the electric shift, loved that shift.

Cal I read somewhere not long ago that BRP (OMC) had stopped making the Type C oil, Sierra and some other after-market companies were the only options now. I hope that's not the case, maybe Jim Andros or somebody can advise/confirm.

Cal, I used to only run the OMC oil,but it's gotten so hard to find and expensive I've been running sierra now with no problems.

OMC/BRP still makes the stuff and yes it is called "premium blend" now. I'm in the middle of doing my fall preseason parts and oil orders at work, planning on getting myself a 5 gallon bucket for home use. (I'm down to about 1 gallon left - Lubrimatic brand I think). The stringer I/Os use over 1/2 gallon at each change.

As for aftermarket lubes, I have over the years used both Lubrimatic and Sierra type C as well as hi-vis in all sorts of outboards and I/Os with no problems. As far as I know, type C is only available in quarts and smaller now thru the aftermarket. Somehow, I doubt anyone else on this forum is thinking in 5 gallon quantities so I doubt that matters. OMC/BRP requires dealers to purchase case quantities (12 per case) of quarts or 10 ounce tubes and that is why it is hard to find. One case could be a several year supply. Most aftermarket vendors will break a case & sell individual quantities.

Jimandros,in my opinion FWIW, the sierra type C is a little better as it seems to be slightly higher viscosity and looks more like the OMC premium blend I remember. I've used Lubrimatic and it seemed like some kind of mineral oil blend(very clear/thin looking).jim l

I've used the West Marine Typ C in my 40hp Johnson. Seems to run fine.

I picked up a quart of OMC stuff yesterday. Price was outrageous but I have absolutely no issues with the selectric or leaking seals and I don't want to change anything.
Drained the unit and the oil that was in there was spotless, clear amber color. I think I'll save it and use it for regular lube for around the house.

$12.00 for 2.5 gal isn't too bad. Then again, I'm used to paying $17.23 for a 5qt. jug of Motorcraft 15w40 diesel oil at Wally World.

I use a 5-20 synthetic blend in my wife's Ford Focus. At 3,000 miles it looks as good coming out as going in. I use it around the house for a million things. I even use it for bar oil in the little pruning chain saw. It has a manual bulb pump. I keep a sealed bucket around to soak things. I store my chain block in a bucket of oil. I hang it and leave it drip dry before use. I always try to reuse oil. ;)

Fred. That's $12+tax for a qt. Almost $50 a gallon but that $50 bucks wouldn't scratch the price of lower unit parts. Cheap insurance.
I too use WallyWorld's $17 oil, what ever is on sale, Pennzoil, Valvoline, GTX etc. Put on over 50k a year on my Jeep and change every 3k (honest). I make my beer money with that vehicle so I can't take any chances with it

Satx, Always did use my old oil for chain bar oil, even used old tranny fluid.

Oh, holy crap! I thought it was 320oz, not 32...my eyes were tired last night. Still, like you said, it's peace of mind for our very expensive parts.

I just bought some Sierra Type C from the local boat store...they didn't have OMC-brand. IIRC, I paid just over $11 for the quart.
