This year's ACBS Blackhawk Chapter Geneva Lakes Antique and Classic Boat Show was a winner with the largest turn out of boats on record and the most perfect weather in recent memory. We had 90 boats in the harbor and nearly 40 boats on land. Sunshine every day with temps in the mid 70’s and a mild breeze that kept the lake relatively calm for excellent boating conditions.

The only thing that could have improved the weekend would have been a Bears win over the Packers. Final: Green Bay 38, Chicago 17

Congratulations to our friends JAG and Julia who were ‘Best Fiberglass’ winners with their gorgeous 1973 Chris Craft XK22 - '22 SkiDoo!!’
To my best recollection I don’t think John has missed collecting that trophy in many years. He is always the winner when he graces our event with his fine examples of Classic Glass here on Geneva Lake.

I took 500+ pictures over the 4 days we spent up there so lots more to come.

Thanks,
Terry

The early autumn weather was picture perfect for a weekend on the water in Southern Wisconsin.
‘Best Outboard’ went to this cool little 1947 Trojan Hot Shot Cottage Racer - 'lil' suzy'
One of my favorite Outboards was my dock mates beautifully restored 1958 Shell Lake Rocket with a great example of the 1961 Merc 700.
This Mohawk Wolverine - ‘Uncle Joe’ has been in the same family since Uncle Joe bought it new in 1958

So Cal, how didja like all those Centuries?

I took over 500 pictures over the 4 days we were up there so have lots more to post. The weekend was over in a flash and I concentrated more on pictures of the boats rather than all the fun activities.

Woody Boater had some great coverage of the events on Sunday you can see here:

Terry, Brings a tear to my eye. I really miss that boat, sold it last fall. Just too much for me to handle at my age, upkeep and all.
I follow the Century Boat Club in emails and facebook and occasionally add my .02 worth. Was registered with Woodyboater when he first started the site up but let it slip by over the years.
Thanks for sharing the pictures.
Last time I was at the Lake Geneva area was a few years ago when Mecum had an auction there. I also took a lot of pictures at that time and missed most of the other actions. Funny how that happens.

Cal, I’ll keep my eyes open for that old gal up here in Illinois. She is an unmistakable beauty and would be hard to miss out on the water.

Now here is one magnificent boat that took ‘Best Classic Runabout under 21ft’.
1948 Ventnor Sport Runabout owned and restored by an old buddy of mine Larry Lange.

The Ventnor, clearly influenced by post war air craft design, was one of the earliest finned boats and predates the Chris Craft Cobra by 7 years.

He completed the flawless restoration just in time to first show the boat in 2011 at the ACBS International Show which our Blackhawk Chapter hosted that year.

His efforts paid off big time at that event winning;
1st Place Restored Classic Runabout
1st Place People’s Choice out of 130+ boats
1st Place Hagerty Youth Judges Choice
Blackhawk Chapter Sharpest Arrow
“Best Original Restoration-As delivered from Factory”

Larry is the consummate professional and one of his claims to fame is that over his career his restorations have been awarded 90 ACBS 1st place wins.

I had the opportunity to spend some time out on Geneva Lake on this great old and new and very beautiful Contemporary Classic.

1980 Millerick Brothers Boat Works Edwardian fantail motor launch - 'PINK HOUR'

She didn’t win this year but did take ‘Best Contemporary Classic’ here last year and in 08 won ‘People’s Choice’ at Tahoe.

The 30’ ten gauge steel hull boat was originally steam powered when found in the woods of a Sonora CA estate. She went through an 8 year restoration and was refitted with a 1948 3 cylinder 20 hp Easthope marine gas engine, teak interior and original brass and recast period style hardware. The Easthope pushes her along at 6 knots at 150 rpm and has both fore and aft steering.

The Pink Hour is a reference to Sunset over the Sierras at Lake Tahoe when the sky warms to pink and orange and is also known as Cocktail Time. The boat seats 8 passengers comfortably and the owner Peter enjoys taking people out to entertain and experience this Classic.

And he even let me have some fun at the helm of ‘PINK HOUR’

See some great photos and video of this beautiful boat running on Lake Tahoe.

Beautiful, beautiful boat. You have to admire the craftsmanship that went into the original build and the restoration. Labor of love keeping the brass polished....maybe.

Peter actually had a few boats there so more to follow.

You guys probably remember Dave Wilson from the Motorheads AOMCI and his great Yellow Jackets with the sweet Mercs. Dave (center) and friends with his 1958 Yellow Jacket Catalina with 1958 Mercury Mark 58E

Back in August in at the Midwest All-Classics Dave showed this 1958 Yellow Jacket Riviera with the 1963 Merc 700.

This is a real nice little boat.

1954 Thompson Hi-speed TVT (Thompson V-Type) owned and restored by our friend Shel.

1956 Gale Buccaneer Deluxe 12 HP w/electric start
This completely factory original motor was on the shelf in a Mom & Pop store for 30 years before being sold in the 80's. Then used for one season and stored away again.

How about some Classic Canoes?

We had two old time canoes on display and to see the craftsmanship that went into building these beautiful examples of water craft is amazing.

Winner of ‘Best Canoe’ 1914 Peterborough Cedar Rib Canoe
Model 87, built between 1914 and 1921

The Peterborough Canoe Company’s catalogue states:
“The Cedar-rib canoe is the triumph of the canoe building art. It combines strength, rigidity, lightness and durability. They are the best and strongest canoe made.”
These types of canoes were built of tongue and grooved cedar ribs running from gunwale to gunwale, and held together by the gunwales, keelson, and stringers running lengthwise.

1957 Willits Brothers Canoe

Double planked Cedar canoe. One of 1,000 built by the Willits Brothers of Tacoma, WA.

Thanks everyone for the kind words. I’m really just blown away that the Blackhawk Chapter has recognized Mama Mia! and views our Glasspar in the same esteem as previous winners of this award. They are all incredible boats and to be included in this fraternity is certainly an honor.

When you’re on Geneva Lake you know you’re in Streblow Country.

Southern Wisconsin is the Home Surf for Streblow Boats. These are unique hand built boats of the highest quality designed and executed with skills that are a rarity today. Streblow boats have a penchant for skipping off the meanest wake and waves that Geneva Lake can offer and land it with a solidness that can only be appreciated by being onboard.

Streblows gathered en masse for the “Wake the Lake” event at LGBS 2012

These masterpieces are a treat just looking at them and the custom stitched upholstery begs “put your butt here”. Out on the water the ride is an experience simply described as thrilling.

The Blackhawk Chapter Youth Group had a great presence again this year and even demonstrated their classic boat restoration skills on-site.

(L-R) Youth Crew Leader Dave with Remington, Mitch, Nick, Mitchell, Lily, Gina, Alex, Will, and Nick

Lily and Alex are honing their skills on the Correct Craft Sea Nymph which is the latest Blackhawk Chapter Youth Program project.

Soon after boarding and a short cruise the CREW awarded ‘Nokomis’ The Blackhawk Youth Award.
