Help me out here. What are some options for mounting a single cable Teleflex system to an older transom? The cable I have now has the splashwell mount but the boat that it might go on looks like it might not work. Any ideas?

I'm thinking the "transom" mount bracket. someone on the site might have one for a song and dance.

I think the transom bracket aslo Cal. Looks like too long of a distance from the splashwell to the motor to use the existing mount. Not real familair with the teleflexes so just my opinion.

The Teleflex isn't likely to make that bend to come through one of those holes.
Reconsider the pulley system.

I'm with Jim here but you could mock it up and try it.

Considering that my wife and my girl will want to drive the boat sometimes it makes sense from a safety standpoint to update to Teleflex steering from what I have been reading.
I don't really want to cut a bunch of holes in the hull so I'm open to alternative routing if need be.

Thanks for all the replies.

Here are some Google pictures of different mountings. The splashwell plate unscrews from the cable to allow other options. I think it can work without any cutting if you run the cable out from under the gunwale behind the rear seat, make the bend and then use a transom mount bracket.

Hi,
The transom mounting might work, but as it must "see saw" on the bracket which bolts to the transom, and therefore I think a much larger splashwell hole may be required. I would advise another mounting which uses the outboard motor upper mounting bolts to attach a bracket to the splashwell in front of the Johnson. The bracket mounts a tube which accepts the steering cable (note that the pictured splashwell mounting assembly has a similar tube). These assemblies also include a link arm to connect the end of the steering cable to attach to the Johnson. It will likely cost more, but no new or enlarged holes should be required, and the steering cable does not have to "see saw" when the outboard is tilted-up/tilted-down for trailering or beaching. The standard Teleflex steering may be enough improvement with the torque steer, but a no-feedback system can be employed (at more cost) which has a clutch system to prevent the outboard itself from turning the steering wheel. The boat's dashboard may determine whether a rotary (as shown) or rack & pinion system would fit best, depending to it's shape and dimensions. Note that the use of mechanical steering may reduce the steering "travel" of the vintage Johnson somewhat (the boat may have a greater turning circle).

Regards,
Joe

Here's a pic of how it could be done. It's actually not that difficult to fabricate your own tube holder to mount to the transom. For some reason they cost around $100 bucks online. I'm really not sure why???

Starboard side with Expensive Transom Mount Bracket...

Looks like a port side steering? The setup came from a starboard system but that should not make much of a difference.
Starboard side you would not need the linkage. The motor mount connection screws
onto the end of the cable (past the hole) and turns and swivels. I'll post a
picture after I remove the splashwell mount bracket and attach the end piece.
Sometime today.

Here is what I have. I think all you would need is the swivel bracket that bolts to
the transom and clamps to the "tube".
Like the transom bracket on the bottom picture from myflamingo.
The prices for those clamps on ebay are crazy. Looks like someone is trying to sell
one to pay for his whole inventory. It would not be hard to fabricate something
similar. Or maybe someone on this site has one laying around to get rid of.
