TOPIC: piperstone sea worthy?

piperstone sea worthy? 10 years 2 weeks ago #100415

Maybe it's a dumb question, my boating experience thus far is limited to canoeing. But once I get my boat restored and running, one of my goals is to take it up around Alaska to do some orca watching, maybe down in the Gulf to see dolphins. It's a 16 ft runabout. I'm sure there are better boats for this and I'll get there someday. But until then I'm hoping mine will work. Not sure of what gas mileage a boat gets. Thanks for any information

Practice on little water first and you'll realize how small your boat really is.

Then practice inshore in the salt.

Then drive out (in a car) to the jetties, pass, inlet and view the surf conditions from land.

I'm sure you'll be more comfortable inshore and on freshwater inland lakes in that boat.

Boys I'm having a hell of a time getting my pics on. Good with my hands, not so much with computers. Keeps telling me my files to big.

We take 14 footers out to the 12 mile rig all the time here in the Gulf.

However you need not be in the Gulf to see to see dolphins they are in the bays and river mouths.

You should know that Tall Texan has years (a lifetime really) of experience, with my limited exposure to salt water (ocean going) I'd be hesitant to take a 20 footer out too far! Big water can turn dangerous pretty fast, best to error on the side of caution IMHO. Besides, any excuse for lots of seat time in a Glassic is a good one. ;)

Exactly! A local with experience is one thing... a newbie "out-of-towner" with little experience is quite another.
