TOPIC: selectric problems

So I tore down my 66 evinrude lark 8. When first got the boat when testing the selectric I had current draw when engage both ways but only had engage in reverse. So thinking from what I read that a spring was broken. So got the springs out and can't tell the problem other than where the clutch rides by the coil has some deep grooving. So where do they break?

Do they look like this?

I don't think this would pose a problem unless you see cracking but if its real deep I would think about replaceing them. not sure how mine are gona fair, I'm still putting my 64 90hp back together. lol. Still learning myself.

The tab breaks off the spring.

Nothing wrong with the parts in the picture.

Well my tabs are intact but it looks like something made of copper is stuck in the one groove

Well look at the motor this weekend with bad news. Tested the one coil and closest to the prop and it doesn't work. No spark when power added. Thinking when I pulled it I didn't know the wire was caught and I damaged the coil. The other coil once I cleaned inside housing I'm sure is no good. Got a picture of it. But looks like part of the coil is missing as all you see is the wires. How does that coil come out?

The factory had a special tool kit with a puller for that job.

If it appears that coil is no good then heating the housing might work.----It will fall out after it expands the housing more than the coil.
