TOPIC: 1971 Johnson 50hp - draining my battery

1971 Johnson 50hp - draining my battery 10 years 5 months ago #93431

Hello.

If I leave my battery hooked up as I am boating, it drains the battery!
If I only use the battery for starting, it is fine.
I need to change my starting solenoid as I wouldn't work without tapping it. Would this cause the problem, or something else?

Thanks

Thanks.

Is this also known as the 'rectifier'?

Mitchsky.
No, the voltage regulator and rectifier are two different units. If it is the regulator hang on to your wallet, they are not cheap. Some are on eBay.

There must be a drain on your system somewhere Mitch, they can be a bugger to find sometimes. After inspecting all wiring, you may have to start unhooking stuff one thing at a time until you find it?

PS - If you have to tap the solenoid to get it to work, it's time to replace it now. (Might kill two birds with one stone!) ;)

Thanks for your input guys. I will try out these ideas when I get the boat out.
